Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not, according to Meta, continuously record everything around the wearer. The privacy concern is more specific: a camera and microphone sit on someone’s face, capture can be casual, and bystanders may not notice or understand the recording signal. Some AI features also involve cloud processing. Meta describes safeguards and limits, but those do not by themselves settle questions of consent, data handling, or local recording law.
Are Ray-Ban Meta glasses always recording?
Meta says the glasses’ white capture LED blinks when a photo or video is being captured for the gallery. For video, the light continues blinking during recording, and Meta says it “has no off switch.” That describes the company’s stated indicator behavior; it does not mean that nearby people will always see or recognize the light.

It is useful to separate three actions that can otherwise blur together:
- Capturing to the gallery: taking a photo or recording video with the glasses.
- Using an AI feature: asking the glasses or connected service to process something, which may involve a different data flow from ordinary gallery capture.
- Sharing content: sending a photo or video to a platform or another person.
Ray-Ban’s U.S. product FAQ describes these as separate flows. A recording is not automatically the same thing as an AI request or a post, and claims about one flow should not be generalized to the others.

Does the recording light mean people know they’re being recorded?
No. The light is a device signal, not proof of informed consent. It may be overlooked, difficult to see in a particular setting, or mistaken for something else. Meta says the glasses prevent capture when the LED is covered and advises users not to deliberately cover it. That is a safeguard against bypassing the indicator, not a solution to the social problem of people being filmed without realizing it.
The practical standard should be more direct than relying on a small light: make recording visible, ask before filming people in private or sensitive settings, and stop if someone objects. Meta’s guidance, quoted by the Associated Press on October 5, 2026, says: “Respect people’s preferences. Not everyone loves being photographed. Stop recording if anyone expresses that they would rather you not.”

Can Meta see what I record?
There is no single answer for every feature and data flow. Ray-Ban’s official U.S. FAQ says photos and videos used for AI features are not saved in Meta AI conversation history. It also says information is used to provide the requested feature and, in protected form, to improve products. Those are company statements about the described product guidance, not an independent audit or a blanket assurance about every recording mode, future version, connected phone, or account.

What runs on the glasses and what may use the cloud?
In a September 23, 2026 engineering post, Meta says some common tasks, including calls and text responses, happen entirely on-device. More advanced AI features require larger models and can involve cloud processing. The post describes Meta’s work on private processing for AI glasses; it should not be read as a guarantee that every feature is processed locally or that the announced architecture already covers every data flow.

Meta’s technical approach matters, but the reader-facing question is feature-specific: what are you asking the glasses to do, and where does that feature process the information? The available product claims distinguish some local tasks from more advanced cloud-dependent features; they do not establish that all information stays on the device.
Does Meta use facial recognition?
Ray-Ban’s current official FAQ says facial-recognition technology is not used. That is a claim from the product maker, scoped to its stated guidance; it should not be expanded into a promise about every future product or every technology that might analyze images.

Why are regulators scrutinizing smart glasses?
Texas: an investigation, not a finding of liability
On May 20, 2026, the Texas Attorney General announced an investigation into privacy representations and possible exposure of recordings and facial geometry, issuing a civil investigative demand. The announcement also referred to allegations involving subcontractor access. An investigation and a regulator’s stated concerns are not a court finding that Meta violated the law, and the announcement alone does not establish the scale or details of any access.
Hamburg: a regional data-protection assessment
On September 10, 2026, Hamburg’s data-protection authority published a technical and legal review. The authority concluded that recording people outside a close circle of friends and family will generally not be permissible in its legal context, except in rare legitimate-interest situations, because the lack of transparency makes informed consent difficult to obtain. It also said there will typically be no legal basis for using such recordings to train Meta AI.

That is the Hamburg authority’s assessment in its jurisdiction, not a universal ruling for every country, venue, or user. The applicable law depends on where recording takes place and the circumstances; this article is not legal advice.
California: a proposed indicator law was vetoed
The Associated Press reported that California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed SB 1130 on October 1, 2026. The proposed measure would have required indicators for certain recording wearables starting in 2028. Because it was vetoed, it is not a current law. The veto also does not grant permission to record where other privacy, consent, or venue rules prohibit it.
How can you protect your privacy around smart glasses?
- Assume the glasses can capture audio and video. Do not treat a wearable camera as socially invisible just because it is small.
- Ask before recording in sensitive or private situations. This is more reliable than expecting people to notice and interpret the capture light.
- Keep the capture signal unobstructed. Meta says capture is prevented when the LED is covered and advises against covering it deliberately.
- Separate recording, AI use, and sharing. Before starting, consider whether you need to capture anything, invoke an AI feature, or send content elsewhere; each can have a different privacy consequence.
- Review the current Meta AI app settings. Check capture, voice, communication, and sharing controls, and disable connected accounts or sharing features you do not need. Menu names and locations can change, so consult the current app and product guidance rather than relying on an old path.
- Stop promptly if someone objects. That is consistent with Meta’s own published guidance.
- Check the rules for the place you are in. Workplaces, private venues, and local jurisdictions may have different restrictions. The Hamburg review does not establish the rules elsewhere.
The core issue is not proof that every interaction is secretly recorded. It is the mismatch between a camera worn on a face and a bystander’s ability to recognize what is happening, compounded by AI features whose processing can vary. An indicator, product FAQ, or technical privacy architecture can address parts of that problem; none substitutes for clear notice, restraint, and respect for the people being recorded.
