Install Playwright and save a WebP screenshot
In a new project, install Playwright with npm install playwright. Playwright also needs its browser binaries; install Chromium with npx playwright install chromium. Then save this as screenshot.js and run node screenshot.js:

})();The output file is screenshot.webp. The explicit type makes the intended format clear; Playwright can also infer the format from the path extension. PNG is the default if you do not specify a type or an extension that selects another format.

Choose the capture and encoding options
File path or Buffer
Use path: 'screenshot.webp' when you want Playwright to write the screenshot to disk. To process or upload the image in your program instead, omit path; page.screenshot() resolves to a Buffer containing the encoded image:

WebP’s quality option accepts values from 0 to 100. The documented value 100 produces a lossless WebP image; lower values use lossy compression. The default is 100. Choose a lower value only if lossy output is acceptable for your use case. File-size savings depend on the page and settings, so measure your own captures rather than assuming a particular reduction.
Viewport, full page, and pixel scale
By default, Playwright captures the current viewport. Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page:

});The scale option controls the output pixel dimensions. scale: 'css' produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; scale: 'device' captures device pixels and is the default. Device-scale output can have more pixels and a larger file, particularly on high-density displays.
Capture one element
For a specific element, use a locator’s screenshot method rather than capturing the whole page. Playwright scrolls the element into view before capturing it:

Stabilize captures
Playwright screenshot options let you disable animations and apply a stylesheet to hide or alter dynamic elements. These controls can make captures more repeatable, but they do not make rendering identical across different operating systems, browser versions, hardware, settings, power sources, or headless modes. Keep those conditions consistent when comparing images.

Use WebP for a visual regression test
If the screenshot is a test snapshot rather than an image you simply want to save, use Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.webp'). WebP snapshots are supported and documented as lossless. Screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the result, and they require the Playwright test runner.
Run snapshot generation and comparison in a consistent rendering environment. Differences in operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can change rendering and produce visual differences unrelated to your code.

Troubleshooting
- The script cannot launch Chromium: install the browser binary with
npx playwright install chromiumafter installing the Playwright package. - The output is PNG instead of WebP: specify
type: 'webp'or use a.webppath. PNG is the default format. - You expected a file but got no file: check that the screenshot call includes
path. Without it, the result is returned as a Buffer and must be handled by your code. - The capture cuts off below the fold: the default is viewport-only. Add
fullPage: truefor a page-wide capture. - A visual test changes between runs or machines: standardize the browser and rendering environment; screenshot assertions do not eliminate environment-dependent rendering differences.
- The image is larger than expected: check whether device-pixel scaling is producing more pixels than CSS-pixel scaling, and consider a lower lossy
qualitysetting if your use case allows it. Measure the resulting output on representative pages.
