Use Puppeteer’s page.waitForSelector() to find the element, then call ElementHandle.screenshot() to save just that element as an image. The example below includes navigation, a missing-element check, and browser cleanup.
Capture one element to a PNG file
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. Save this as capture-element.mjs and run it with node capture-element.mjs:

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
const element = await page.waitForSelector('.target-element');
if (!element) throw new Error('Target element was not found');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
await element.dispose();
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Replace https://example.com with the page URL and .target-element with a selector matching the element you want. The resulting element.png is written to the current working directory. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates this handle-based pattern; the API reference describes ElementHandle.screenshot() as capturing the represented element using the page screenshot mechanism. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide and ElementHandle.screenshot() API reference.

- Launch and navigate:
puppeteer.launch()starts a browser, andpage.goto()loads the target.networkidle2is the wait choice in the guide’s example, not a requirement; choose a navigation condition that fits the page. - Find the element:
page.waitForSelector()waits for the selector and returns an element handle when it appears. - Capture:
element.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' })saves an image of the selected element. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if needed. - Clean up: Dispose of the handle and close the browser. The
finallyblock closes the browser even if navigation, selection, or capture throws.
The code uses top-level await in an ES module, enabled here by the .mjs extension. If your project uses CommonJS, place the asynchronous work inside an async function and load Puppeteer with require('puppeteer').

Choose when the page and element are ready
Waiting for navigation and waiting for the target element solve different problems. A page can finish its chosen navigation wait before client-side code inserts the element; waitForSelector() then waits for that element. Conversely, on pages with ongoing network activity, a network-idle condition may take longer than necessary or may not suit the page. Select the navigation condition and element wait based on how the specific site renders.
For dynamic content, make sure the desired element is actually ready before capturing it—for example, wait for a selector that only appears after the content is rendered. The documentation establishes the selector wait and capture behavior, but does not prescribe a universal strategy for every application’s loading state.

Save the image or use its returned data
Passing path writes the screenshot to a file. If you omit path, the method returns image data as a Uint8Array by default. Set encoding: 'base64' when you need a base64 string instead. The method’s return and options are documented in the ElementHandle screenshot API.
Screenshot options include type for the output format, clip for a region, fullPage for a full-page capture, and omitBackground for a transparent background. PNG is the documented default; quality applies to formats other than PNG. For a screenshot of exactly one DOM element, call the element handle’s method rather than using page-level full-page capture.

Element handles and locators
The direct handle pattern is the documented route for this task because ElementHandle exposes screenshot(). Puppeteer also recommends locators for selecting and interacting with elements: locator actions include readiness checks and retries, and locators accept CSS selectors as well as Puppeteer selector syntax for text, accessibility roles and names, XPath, and shadow-root querying. The documentation reviewed here does not establish a locator screenshot method, so use a handle for the actual element capture. See Puppeteer page interactions and locators and Locator API.
| Approach | Best fit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
waitForSelector() then ElementHandle.screenshot() |
Directly capturing an element | The handle has the documented screenshot method; it can become stale if the DOM node is removed. |
page.locator() |
Selection and interaction workflows that benefit from readiness checks and retries | Use locator guidance for interactions, but obtain an element handle for the documented element screenshot call. |
Common problems and fixes
- The selector never resolves: Confirm the selector matches the live page and that the element is rendered in the page context you are querying. If it is added after navigation, ensure your selector wait follows navigation.
- The screenshot call throws because the node was detached: The element handle refers to a DOM node that was removed before capture. On pages that replace elements, locate the current element close to the screenshot call and handle the error according to your application’s retry policy. Puppeteer documents the detached-node failure but does not prescribe a universal retry strategy.
- The image has an unexpected background or format: PNG is the default. Set a supported
typeor useomitBackgroundif you need a transparent background;qualitydoes not apply to PNG. - The browser stays open after a failure: Keep browser closure in a
finallyblock, as in the example, so exceptions do not bypass cleanup. - The capture happens before useful content appears: A navigation wait alone may not mean the target is ready. Wait for the target selector, or for an application-specific readiness condition before taking the screenshot.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Puppeteer return from an element screenshot if I do not provide a path?
It returns a Uint8Array by default; set encoding: 'base64' to request a base64 string.
Does ElementHandle.screenshot() bring an off-screen element into view?
Yes. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if needed before capturing it.
