Choose a screenshot API when you want to send a request and receive an image; choose Playwright when you want browser automation and screenshot capture inside your own code. The first delegates browser execution to a service; the second gives your application direct control of a browser page. Neither approach is universally faster, cheaper, or more reliable: those outcomes depend on the service, deployment, page mix, and workload.
What is the difference?
A screenshot API exposes page capture as a service request. Your application supplies a URL or HTML, along with supported options, and the service returns an image. Browserless, for example, documents a hosted REST endpoint that accepts a URL or inline HTML and can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP. That illustrates one service’s API, not every vendor’s capabilities. Use a screenshot API when
- You want an HTTP request/response interface instead of writing and maintaining the browser workflow yourself.
- Your application’s needs fit the options exposed by the service you select.
- You have reviewed the vendor’s current pricing, quotas, concurrency limits, deployment details, and security terms for your workload.
Use Playwright when
- You need browser-page automation as part of application code, rather than only a remote capture request.
- You want to use Playwright’s documented page screenshot controls and coordinate capture with the rest of your browser workflow.
- You can provision, update, scale, and monitor the browser execution environment, or have a deployment that handles those responsibilities.
These are integration and responsibility differences, not a guarantee that one option wins on cost, speed, reliability, or geographic reach. The relevant documentation does not provide a like-for-like benchmark or a universal comparison of those factors.

Capture options are not automatically interchangeable across implementations. Verify the current API reference for exact option names and behavior, and check a service’s own documentation rather than assuming it offers every Playwright control.
Capture an HTML page with Playwright
Playwright’s screenshots guide demonstrates navigating to a page and saving a screenshot. Install Playwright and its browser dependencies according to the official installation guide, then save this as an ES module such as capture.mjs:

Adapt the capture to the page
- Viewport only: omit
fullPage: trueto capture the visible viewport rather than the full scrollable page. - Image type and scale: Playwright documents output-type and scale options. Check the current API reference for valid values and constraints before setting them.
- Dynamic content: if the page renders content after navigation, wait for a page-specific condition before calling
screenshot. A fixed delay may be less reliable than waiting for a selector that signals the content is ready. - Lazy-loaded images: full-page output does not itself prove that every page’s lazy content has finished loading. Test the target page and use an appropriate scroll or readiness strategy if below-the-fold content matters.
- Authentication or sensitive content: handle credentials and browser state in your own environment carefully; do not send them to a hosted service unless its security and data-handling terms meet your requirements.
Call a hosted screenshot API
A hosted API typically replaces local browser setup with an HTTP request, but request shape, authentication, options, and returned data depend on the vendor. Cost, throughput, and reliability: what to check
Do not infer comparative performance or total cost from the API shapes alone. The cited Playwright and Browserless documentation establishes how their screenshot mechanisms work, not a cross-product price, speed, uptime, concurrency, or regional comparison.

- Price your actual workload: check current service prices and quotas, or account for the browser infrastructure and operating work in your own deployment.
- Test representative pages: compare the pages, viewport sizes, output types, readiness conditions, and capture frequency your application actually uses.
- Check burst behavior: establish concurrency and rate limits with the service provider, or measure what your browser deployment can sustain.
- Plan for failures: decide how the application handles navigation errors, timeouts, incomplete rendering, retries, and invalid output.
- Review data exposure: determine where page content is processed, how credentials are passed, what network access exists, and what retention controls apply. The endpoint documentation alone does not settle these questions.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Check whether navigation succeeded and whether the page’s meaningful content appears after the event you currently wait for. Add a page-specific readiness condition before taking the screenshot; inspect a viewport capture to distinguish an empty render from a full-page sizing issue.
Content below the fold is missing
Confirm that you enabled full-page capture. If the page loads images or other content lazily while scrolling, ensure those resources have loaded before capture; full-page output alone does not guarantee that every site has completed its lazy-loading behavior.
The API request fails or returns an unexpected format
For a hosted endpoint, verify the documented HTTP method, endpoint path, authentication, request fields, and output option. Do not assume one provider’s request format applies to another. Check the HTTP response and current API documentation to distinguish authentication or input errors from page-rendering failures.

A capture works locally but not in production
Check browser installation and launch requirements, available memory and concurrency, network access to the target page, and differences in fonts or other rendering dependencies. For a hosted API, check its current service limits and whether the target site is reachable under the vendor’s execution conditions.
A protected or personalized page looks different
Verify that the capture has the same authorized session, cookies, headers, and user context as the intended view. Do not place credentials in URLs or send sensitive page content to a third party without reviewing its security and data-handling terms.

Can a screenshot API accept HTML instead of a URL?
Some can. Browserless documents support for a URL or inline HTML; that does not establish the same capability for every screenshot API.

Does a full-page screenshot include the entire scrollable page?
Playwright’s guide describes full-page capture as a tall-screen-style image of the full scrollable page. Whether all dynamic or lazy-loaded content has rendered still depends on the page and capture timing.
Is a screenshot API always cheaper or faster than Playwright?
No universal comparison is established by the cited documentation. Compare current terms and test a representative workload before choosing.
