A Tailscale exit node routes a participating device’s internet traffic through another device in its tailnet. Wi-Fi hardening secures the wireless network itself—including the router or access point, connected devices, settings, and ongoing maintenance. They address different parts of the connection: an exit node can be useful on untrusted Wi-Fi, but it does not secure that Wi-Fi network; hardening your own Wi-Fi does not route traffic through a remote device.
What a Tailscale exit node protects
An exit node is a device in a Tailscale network, or tailnet, that another tailnet device can use as a route for internet-bound traffic. Tailscale says the exit node captures traffic not already directed to a subnet router or app connector. The client must opt in, the exit-node device must advertise that role, and a tailnet administrator must authorize it. Tailscale’s exit-node documentation describes the routing behavior and requirements.

Tailscale identifies untrusted Wi-Fi as one reason to use an exit node: the client’s internet traffic is routed through the chosen tailnet device rather than going directly out through the network it is connected to. That changes the traffic route; it does not configure, patch, or otherwise harden the Wi-Fi access point. Tailscale’s quickstart describes the untrusted-Wi-Fi use case.
There is also a local-network trade-off. By default, a device using an exit node loses access to its local network. Tailscale provides an option to allow local network access, which may be useful if you still need to reach a printer or other device on the Wi-Fi network. See Tailscale’s exit-node documentation for this setting.
#1 Best Overall

What Wi-Fi network hardening protects
Wi-Fi hardening focuses on the wireless network and its components: the access point or router, client devices, configuration, and maintenance over time. NIST’s Guidelines for Securing Wireless Local Area Networks says WLAN security depends on securing those components through design, deployment, maintenance, and monitoring.
For a home network, NIST’s Telework Security Basics advises checking for WPA2 or WPA3 security and using a hard-to-guess Wi-Fi password. For work-from-home use, it also says to use an organization’s VPN when one is available and required by policy.

- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Practical hardening starts with the equipment you already have. Check its supported wireless security settings, change default access-point identifiers and passwords where applicable, keep its software updated, and use available firewall settings. CISA’s wireless guidance recommends these kinds of measures, but it dates to 2006 and was updated in 2008, so treat it as older baseline advice rather than a complete statement of current best practice. How the two approaches differ
| Question | Tailscale exit node | Wi-Fi network hardening |
|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Where a configured Tailscale client sends internet traffic | The WLAN, its router or access point, connected devices, settings, and upkeep |
| Typical situation | A device is on untrusted Wi-Fi or needs its internet traffic to emerge through another location | A home or organizational wireless network needs secure configuration and ongoing maintenance |
| Who or what it applies to | Clients authorized and configured to use the exit node; some traffic may already be routed to a subnet router or app connector | The wireless network and its components, including client devices and access points |
| Practical check | Confirm the intended exit node is selected and decide whether local-network access is needed | Check WPA2 or WPA3 support, use a strong password, replace defaults where appropriate, and apply updates |
| What it does not do | It does not configure or harden the Wi-Fi router | It does not route a device’s internet traffic through a remote tailnet device |
Which should you use?
When you connect to untrusted Wi-Fi
Using an authorized Tailscale exit node can route the participating device’s internet traffic through a device in your tailnet. This is a route choice, not a substitute for securing the network infrastructure. Keep in mind that local-network access is disabled by default while using an exit node unless you enable the relevant option.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
When securing your home Wi-Fi
Start with the router or access point’s available security settings and update status, then protect the password and connected devices. NIST’s consumer-grade router cybersecurity profile, IR 8425A, was published on September 10, 2024. Its existence supports treating router security as an important part of the picture; it is not a comparison of router products or proof that you need to buy a new one. Check whether your current equipment supports suitable settings and ongoing updates before considering a replacement.
When both are relevant
The controls can serve different needs at the same time: harden the home or organizational WLAN to protect its configuration and components, and use an exit node when you want a participating Tailscale client’s internet traffic to take that route. Neither control makes the other redundant.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
What neither approach establishes
These measures address different parts of network security, and neither is a universal guarantee. An exit node changes a client’s route but does not itself secure the Wi-Fi access point. Wi-Fi hardening improves the wireless network’s security posture but does not send internet traffic through a tailnet device. The sources cited here do not establish that every person needs an exit node, a new router, or both.
