A tablet call can echo when its speaker sound is picked up again by a microphone; call delay is more often a connection or device-performance problem. Start by isolating the sound path, then investigate Wi-Fi and the tablet itself. Headphones, lower speaker volume, a steadier network, and the right app audio settings often identify the issue without buying anything.
First work out whether the problem is echo or delay
Echo and delay are different symptoms, so treat them as separate checks. Echo is commonly caused by sound looping from a speaker into a microphone, or by more than one active audio connection in the same room. Delay can involve unstable Wi-Fi, latency, VPN routing, or a tablet or app under load. The person who hears the echo does not, by itself, identify which device is causing it.

- Echo: Someone hears their own voice repeated, often shortly after speaking.
- Delay: Conversation arrives late, voices break up, or audio and video fall out of sync.
If the call has both symptoms, test echo first; changing Wi-Fi alone will not necessarily stop acoustic feedback.

1. Test with headphones and lower the speaker
Connect headphones and make a short test call. If the echo improves, the tablet speaker may have been feeding sound back into a microphone. If you do not have headphones, lower the speaker volume and mute your microphone while you are not speaking. Google recommends a headset with a microphone for poor audio and headphones to help avoid echo: Google Meet’s audio and video troubleshooting guidance.

2. Check for another active audio connection
Look for a second phone, tablet, or computer in the room that has joined the call or is playing its audio. Disconnect its audio rather than assuming that muting its microphone is enough: its speaker may still be on. In Zoom, a host can mute attendees one at a time to help identify which attendee is producing echo. Zoom lists nearby speakers, multiple active computers, simultaneous computer and telephone audio, loud speakers, a faulty microphone, or failed echo cancellation among possible causes. See Zoom’s guidance on managing audio echo.
3. Confirm the call app’s audio devices
In the calling app’s audio settings, check which microphone and speaker are selected. If you are using Bluetooth, verify that the app is actually using the intended headset. Bluetooth can be convenient, but Google cautions that some Bluetooth headsets may work poorly with Meet, and Zoom notes that other participants may hear lower microphone quality from Bluetooth headphones. These are app-specific cautions, not proof that every Bluetooth headset will cause echo. See Zoom’s Bluetooth-headphone guidance.

What to check when a tablet call is delayed on Wi-Fi
1. Check the connection over time
Run an internet speed test and watch whether bandwidth and latency remain steady during the problem. One good reading does not establish that the connection stayed stable throughout a call. Move closer to the router or access point and try another Wi-Fi network or hotspot if available. Google suggests trying 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than the more heavily used 2.4 GHz band when both are available. Zoom also recommends testing another Wi-Fi connection or wired access when troubleshooting latency, poor audio, frozen video, or dropped meetings. See Google Meet’s troubleshooting steps and Zoom’s Wi-Fi connection guidance.
There is no single speed-test result established here as a guarantee of good tablet calls. In administrator-facing Google Meet guidance, video quality is highest when client-to-Google round-trip latency is below 100 ms. That scoped figure is not a universal pass/fail threshold for every tablet, calling app, network, or route. See Google Workspace’s Meet network troubleshooting guidance.

2. Test without a VPN if one is in use
A VPN can add another network location between the tablet and the meeting. Google explains: “A VPN routes traffic through an additional network location and may delay video transmission to and from your Meet meeting.” Temporarily test without the VPN only if you are allowed to do so; check with your administrator before changing a managed work or school network. The Google guidance is for Meet, so it does not establish that every VPN will affect every calling app.
3. Reduce competing work on the tablet
Close nonessential apps and browser tabs, then test again. If the call is struggling, reducing video quality can also help narrow down whether the tablet or connection is under strain. Google identifies numerous open tabs and applications as possible contributors to poor video quality; this is a troubleshooting check, not proof that background apps are the cause of every delay.

Check the tablet’s microphone and permissions
If other people hear echo, distortion, or unclear speech even when you have headphones connected, check the tablet’s microphone path as well as the app’s input selection. Confirm that the calling app has microphone permission and that the selected input is the one you intend to use.

For an iPad, Apple recommends removing a case or film that may cover microphone openings, clearing debris, and testing the microphones by recording video with the front and back cameras and replaying the recordings. If the recordings remain unclear after those checks, Apple says service may be needed. Follow Apple’s iPad microphone troubleshooting steps.

When an accessory is worth trying
A headset with a microphone is the most direct accessory test for echo or unclear audio. Choose it by checking the tablet’s connector and model, confirming that the headset includes a microphone, and verifying that the calling app selects the intended input and output. A wired connection avoids relying on Bluetooth, but compatibility still depends on the tablet, connector, and app.
For USB-C iPads, Apple documents USB-C headphones and a separately sold USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone adapter. Apple also lists USB-to-Ethernet adapters among possible USB-C connections. These are conditional options: check the exact iPad model, port, headset plug, adapter requirements, and network setup before buying or testing an accessory. See Apple’s USB-C iPad connection guidance. An Ethernet adapter can help test wired access where the tablet and network support it, but it is not a universal fix for call delay.
Do not start by buying a new router. First test Wi-Fi conditions, another network, or wired access if available. The troubleshooting guidance supports those tests, but does not establish that a particular router purchase will improve a specific call.
