In T20 cricket, a batter’s strike rate is runs scored per 100 balls faced. Boundary percentage is less standard: it can mean the share of balls that produce a four or six, or the share of the batter’s runs scored in boundaries. Scoring rate also needs a unit—runs per over and runs per 100 balls are not the same expression.
What is a T20 batting strike rate?
Batting strike rate (SR) is the number of runs a batter scores per 100 balls faced. It is a rate, not a percentage of runs or a measure of overall batting quality.

Formula: (runs scored ÷ balls faced) × 100
For example, 45 runs from 30 balls gives (45 ÷ 30) × 100 = 150. That means the batter scored at a pace equivalent to 150 runs per 100 balls faced; it does not mean the batter scored 150 runs.

What does boundary percentage mean?
There is no single universal definition established for “boundary percentage,” so check the source’s denominator before comparing figures. Two possible measures answer different questions:
| Measure | Calculation | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Boundary Strike-Rate (ball-based) | (Balls faced that result in a four or six ÷ balls faced) × 100 | How frequently the batter hits a boundary per ball faced. |
| Boundary share of runs (runs-based) | (Runs credited to the batter from fours and sixes ÷ batter’s total runs) × 100 | What proportion of the batter’s runs came from boundaries. |
The T20 Player Index uses the first kind of measure, calling it “Boundary Strike-Rate”: the percentage of balls faced hit for four or six. It is not the same as the share of a batter’s total runs from boundaries. If calculating a runs-based share, state that the numerator includes fours and sixes credited to the batter. Is scoring rate the same as strike rate?
Not necessarily. “Scoring rate” is ambiguous unless the unit and subject are named. A team’s scoring rate is commonly expressed in runs per over; an individual batter’s strike rate is conventionally expressed in runs per 100 balls faced.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWith a standard six-valid-ball over, a batter’s runs-per-over pace is their strike rate multiplied by 0.06. For example, a strike rate of 150 corresponds to 9 runs per over at that pace. This conversion is only a way of expressing the same pace in different units; in a match, team run rate and a batter’s strike rate describe different scoring totals and contexts.
ICC Men’s T20I playing conditions dated 28 September 2017 state that an uninterrupted innings is limited to a maximum of 20 overs; an innings can end sooner if the side is all out, and interrupted matches can have revised overs. That is the cited 2017 edition, not confirmation of the current rule wording. ICC Men’s T20I Match Clause 13: Innings.
How to read these numbers in context
Strike rate answers “how fast?” It cannot by itself tell you whether an innings was valuable, how often a batter was dismissed, how challenging the bowling was, or what the match situation required. Boundary frequency adds information about scoring method: a batter may score quickly through frequent fours and sixes or through running and other scoring shots. Neither approach is inherently better on the strength of one metric.

The T20 Player Index lists boundary strike rate and activity rate—the share of balls on which at least one run is scored—among several inputs to its index, and describes adjustments for match context and opposition strength. That is one proprietary methodology, not a universal standard for judging batters. T20 Player Index FAQ.
