A sports-betting offer that mentions your team, arrives after you use an account, or appears to match your habits may feel personally targeted. Those clues do not prove that artificial intelligence (AI) generated or selected it: the UK sources cited here describe account monitoring and automated harm interventions, not AI-powered promotion targeting. You can still assess an offer’s terms, control marketing messages, and choose stronger barriers if betting is becoming difficult to manage.
What can make a betting offer seem personalized?
Look for observable details, not conclusions about how the operator chose the offer. It may name a team or market you follow, arrive soon after account activity, refer to your eligibility or account status, or reach you through a direct message. Note what you saw and when, but do not assume you know which data the operator used.

None of these signs identifies AI. The UK Gambling Commission’s guidance describes remote operators monitoring indicators of harm and tailoring interventions; it does not establish that a named sportsbook uses AI to personalize promotions. Copy, timing, or apparent relevance alone cannot tell you whether AI was involved. The Commission’s customer-interaction guidance concerns consumer-protection monitoring, not proof of AI marketing.

Read the conditions before signing up, depositing, or placing a bet. UK Gambling Commission guidance says significant promotion terms should be prominent and close to the headline offer, and should be clear, timely, intelligible, unambiguous, and transparent. Its open-and-transparent-marketing guidance gives the UK context.

- Marketing channel: If the offer arrived by email, text, or another direct electronic channel, decide whether you want to receive that kind of message.
UK rules that came into force on 19 January 2026 ban promotions requiring play across two or more gambling products and cap bonus wagering requirements at ten times. The Commission’s example illustrates why the multiplier matters: a £10 bonus with a 50-times requirement would require £500 of playthrough. These are UK-specific rules; check the terms and current official guidance for your circumstances. The Commission’s announcement explains the changes.
How to reduce or stop marketing messages
In the UK, direct electronic marketing generally requires informed, specific consent, and you must be able to withdraw that consent. Review the operator’s account preferences for marketing channels and product categories, turn off messages you do not want, or use the unsubscribe or preference controls in a message. Keep a record of the change, such as a confirmation screen or email. The Commission’s marketing guidance covers consent and withdrawal.

Turning off promotions reduces contact; it does not necessarily stop account access or betting. If you want to stop gambling, use a stronger measure rather than relying only on a marketing preference.
Set boundaries before a match
Make decisions before a match or offer creates pressure. Choose whether you will bet at all, decide the maximum amount you can afford to lose and the time you will spend, and commit not to increase either limit to recover losses. Treat an offer as optional, not as a reason to change a plan.
Rank #3
Operators may provide account-management tools, but a setting should not be treated as a guarantee that you will stay within your plan. Check the operator’s current account controls directly; the available evidence does not establish one standard interface or set of limits for every service.
When to use stronger safeguards
Consider escalating if you find it hard to stop, exceed limits, chase losses, or keep betting despite deciding not to. The right measure depends on whether you want fewer messages, a pause, or a formal block.

- Blocking software: The UK Gambling Commission identifies blocking software as an option for people seeking to stop access to gambling services.
- Self-exclusion: A formal stop measure. In the UK, online customers can use GAMSTOP to exclude themselves from participating online gambling operators. After a self-exclusion agreement, the operator must close the account, return funds held in it, and remove the person’s details from its marketing databases. See the Commission’s self-exclusion guidance for details and support options.
Why promotional offers deserve a second look
A 2024 Advertising Standards Authority briefing reported that 31% of respondents who had received a promotional offer said free bets or bonus offers encouraged them to gamble more than they wanted; the figure was 77% among respondents classified as “problem gamblers.” These figures are reported by the ASA briefing and should not be read as estimates for all bettors. Read the ASA’s gambling advertising briefing.
