As of October 7, 2026, Epic Games Store’s Windows listing showed System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster as free, with the displayed offer ending October 8 at 11:00 PM in the store’s local time. Check the live listing for your region and its current claim deadline. This is the 2025 remaster by Nightdive Studios, published by Atari—not the original 1999 release. And yes: the remaster supports controllers, with interface changes intended to make gamepad play more practical.
What’s free on Epic, and until when?
Epic’s listing identifies the free game as System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster for Windows, developed by Nightdive Studios and published by Atari. The listing displayed an offer deadline of October 8, 2026, at 11:00 PM in its store-local time when checked on October 7, 2026. Because offer timing and availability can vary by region and change, check Epic’s live listing before relying on that deadline or availability.

Epic also advertises optimized controller support for the Windows edition. That makes a gamepad an option, not a requirement; the listing and developer feature descriptions do not establish that any particular controller is necessary.
Can you play System Shock 2 with a controller?
Yes. Nightdive added controller-oriented navigation to the remaster’s PDA screens and hacking tools, along with controls for switching between interfaces and quick-access bars. These changes address a practical challenge in a game built around frequent use of menus and equipment: a controller can reach those functions without relying on the original keyboard-command layout.
#1 Best Overall
How Nightdive adapted the controls
- PDA and hacking: The directional pad and face buttons navigate PDA screens and hacking tools.
- Interfaces and quickbars: Triggers cycle through PDA interfaces; bumpers switch tabs and quickbars.
- Aiming and leaning: Aim slowing is available for finer adjustments, and a single lean toggle uses the control stick to choose the direction.
- Remapping: Nightdive says nearly every control can be remapped, with analog-stick looking and walking as the exceptions.
Nightdive developer Lexi Mayfield described the aim and lean changes in an Xbox Wire interview published March 20, 2025: “You can also slow down your aim for the sake of accuracy, and instead of multiple lean buttons there’s now a single lean toggle that uses the control stick for the lean direction.” These are the developer’s descriptions of the implementation, not a controlled comparison of input methods.
What changed from the original’s keyboard-first controls?
The original game’s manual documents separate keyboard commands for actions such as opening the map and inventory, quicksaving, and selecting weapons. Nightdive has also said the original engine and game were designed for late-1990s PCs with mouse and keyboard. The remaster’s gamepad navigation is therefore a meaningful change in how players can access the game’s systems; it does not establish that mouse and keyboard are worse.

- 【Intimate Design】: There is a suction cup at the bottom of the finger shock roulette, which is not easy to shake when playing. And an instruction manual in the box for your reference.
The remaster’s controller features are documented by Nightdive, while the original manual describes the original game’s bindings. Those are different versions of the game, so consult the remaster’s current in-game settings for its actual control assignments.
Controller or mouse and keyboard: which should you use?
| Consideration | Controller | Mouse and keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Menus and interface | D-pad and face-button navigation for PDA screens and hacking tools, according to Nightdive. | The original manual documents separate keyboard commands for several interfaces and actions. |
| Weapons and psi powers | Nightdive describes bumper access to tabs and quickbars; the cited feature description does not establish that this is faster for every player. | The original manual documents keyboard-based weapon selection; remaster-specific keyboard assignments should be checked in-game. |
| Aiming | Nightdive says aim can be slowed for accuracy. | The sources do not provide a measured comparison of aiming precision. |
| Customization | Nightdive says nearly all controls can be remapped except analog-stick looking and walking. | The cited sources do not give a comparable remapping specification for the remaster. |
| Best fit | May suit players who prefer gamepad navigation and stick-based movement or aiming. | May suit players who prefer mouse-and-keyboard input or the original control style. |
No cited source compares the two methods in a controlled test, so there is no evidence-based universal winner. Choose based on the input style you find comfortable; if you already own a PC game controller, Epic’s listing and Nightdive’s feature descriptions establish that the remaster supports using one, but do not establish a required model or hands-on performance for a specific device.

What about PlayStation controller models?
In a separate interview, Nightdive discussed DualShock 4 and DualSense support in the PlayStation context, including inventory context actions. Those console-specific details should not be treated as a guarantee that the same features or prompts apply to every Windows controller setup. On PC, check the remaster’s settings and the live Epic listing for the information relevant to your configuration.
