System Informer’s Troubleshooting Features: When to Use It Instead of Task Manager

System Informer adds investigative views for graph peaks, file locks, network connections, disk activity, and services. Here is how to use them safely and when Task Manager is enough.

System Informer can help answer questions that a basic process list cannot: which process was active during a resource spike, what is keeping a file open, which process owns a network connection, and where disk activity is coming from. Its advantage is more detailed inspection—not proof that Windows Task Manager is useless. Microsoft describes Task Manager as Windows’ in-box tool for monitoring application and process performance and resource use, and it has troubleshooting workflows of its own. (Microsoft Learn)

What System Informer adds to Windows troubleshooting

System Informer brings process activity, resource graphs, network connections, disk activity, services, stack traces, and GPU usage into one utility. These views provide evidence to investigate; they do not automatically identify the underlying cause of a problem. The project describes it as a tool for monitoring resources, debugging software, and detecting malware. (System Informer readme; feature page)

That makes it most useful when you need to move from “something is using resources” to “which process was involved, and what can I inspect about it?” Task Manager remains a reasonable first stop for everyday monitoring; its appearance and available data vary somewhat across Windows versions. How can I see which process caused a CPU or resource spike?

Open System Information with Ctrl+I and inspect its resource graphs. Hover over graph data points for tooltips; the feature page says you can double-click a point to inspect the associated process, including one that has already exited. That historical association is useful when a spike is brief and the process is gone by the time you open the tool. (System Informer feature page)

#1 Best Overall

Use the graph as a lead, not a complete diagnosis: it can associate a peak with a process, but it does not by itself explain why that process used CPU, memory, I/O, or GPU resources. Follow up by inspecting the process and its activity.

How do I find what process is using a file?

If a file cannot be edited, moved, or deleted because it is in use, press Ctrl+F to search for a handle or DLL, then identify the process that owns it. Finding the owner is the important first step: it can tell you whether the file is being held by an application you recognize or a background process that needs further investigation. (System Informer feature page)

Closing a handle is a last resort, not routine cleanup. System Informer warns that forcing a handle closed can cause data loss or corruption. Prefer closing the owning application normally; do not force-close a handle if you cannot assess the consequences for the file or process.

Can I see which program is using my network?

Inspect active network connections and the processes associated with them to investigate unexpected network activity. An unfamiliar connection is not, by itself, proof of malware; identify the process and investigate its context before taking action. The feature page also describes closing a connection or process, but termination can interrupt legitimate work. (System Informer feature page)

The project says network information supplied by its ExtendedTools plugin is available when System Informer runs with administrative rights. Elevation is therefore a condition for that plugin-provided view, not a general requirement for every use of the application. (System Informer readme)

How do I investigate unexpected disk activity?

Use the disk access and disk usage or statistics views to see what is active and which processes are involved. These views can narrow an investigation to a process or pattern of activity, but they do not establish that the activity is harmful or identify its root cause on their own. (System Informer feature page)

Disk information provided by ExtendedTools requires administrative rights, according to the project readme. If the plugin’s disk details are unavailable, check whether the application is running elevated before treating the missing view as evidence that there is no disk activity. (System Informer readme)

How do I inspect Windows services and drivers?

System Informer’s service view can help you inspect services, and the feature page says driver services appear by default. The project also documents creating, editing, and controlling services. Inspection is different from intervention: changing a service can affect Windows or installed software, and the documentation does not prescribe safe settings for every PC. Confirm what a service belongs to and why it is running before changing or stopping it. (System Informer feature page)

When is Task Manager enough, and when is System Informer worth opening?

Question Task Manager System Informer
Which apps or processes are using resources now? Microsoft identifies it as Windows’ in-box tool for monitoring application and process performance and resource use. (Microsoft Learn) Provides process and resource views, including graphs and process inspection. (Feature page)
Which process was associated with a past graph peak? Not stated in the cited Microsoft documentation. The feature page documents graph tooltips and double-clicking a point to inspect its process, including one that has exited. (Feature page)
What process is holding a file? Not stated in the cited Microsoft documentation. Ctrl+F searches for a handle or DLL so you can identify its process. (Feature page)
Which process owns a network connection or is doing disk work? Not stated in the cited Microsoft documentation. Provides connection and disk views; ExtendedTools network and disk information requires administrative rights. (Feature page; readme)
Service and driver inspection or control Not stated in the cited Microsoft documentation. Documents service management; driver services appear by default in the service view. (Feature page)

The table compares documented workflows, not a measured performance ranking. Start with Task Manager if you only need an in-box overview. System Informer is a better fit when you specifically need graph-to-process history, handle or DLL lookup, or its more detailed activity and service views.

What should advanced users know about newer features?

The project’s 4.0 release notes describe a driver-backed Process Monitor and opt-in Hybrid Analysis integration, among other application and driver changes. Those are release-specific capabilities, not guarantees about every earlier build or a default configuration; check the installed version and settings before relying on them. (System Informer releases)

The readme also lists detailed stack traces with kernel-mode, WOW64, and .NET support, which can be useful in deeper developer or administrator investigations. (System Informer readme)

Where can I download it, and which Windows versions are listed?

The official downloads page currently lists Windows 10 and Windows 11, with 32-bit and 64-bit choices and both setup and portable distributions. It listed build 4.0.26241 on October 7, 2026; build listings can change, so check the download page for the current release and its published hashes before installing. (System Informer downloads)

The project readme mentions Windows 7 or higher, but that conflicts with the current downloads page and GitHub README, which say Windows 10 or higher. For a current compatibility decision, follow the downloads page’s Windows 10/11 listing rather than the older readme requirement. (System Informer readme; downloads; GitHub README)
