When you publish through a Synthesia share page, embed, or SCORM package, Synthesia’s hosted player delivers the video. That makes publishing and updates easier to manage, but availability through those routes depends on Synthesia’s service and publishing controls.
What “Synthesia owns its video player” means
The phrase is best understood as a description of service control, not as a standalone legal ruling about a separately named player asset. Synthesia’s publishing documentation says its share pages, embeds, and SCORM packages load the Synthesia-hosted player. Its customer terms say Synthesia owns its Services and their components, while customers own their Customer Data, subject to the terms’ exclusions.

Those statements distinguish the delivery software from the customer’s video content. They do not mean Synthesia owns every video customers create, nor does the documentation separately adjudicate the player as an asset apart from the Services.
How the API differs from the player
Synthesia describes two API products for different jobs. The Video API generates finished video files and supports workflows such as templates, translation, dubbing, and automation. The Interactive Avatars API is for a real-time conversational session. Neither description makes the API itself a viewer-facing player.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Publishing comes afterward: the share page, embed, or SCORM package loads the hosted player to show the video. In practical terms, the API is an interface for creating or integrating content; the player is part of the delivery route your viewers use.
Video API access details
The current Video API quickstart specifies a Legacy (v2)-scoped API key. Keys are associated with a user account, not a workspace. Synthesia’s API help distinguishes this scope from Interactive Avatars and lists Legacy (v2) API access for Creator and Enterprise plans. Plan eligibility can change, so verify current access requirements in Synthesia’s documentation before building around them.

What happens with each publishing route
| Route | How delivery works | Operational consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Share page | A public page uses Synthesia’s hosted player; the page can be configured and its link can be deleted. | Quick to distribute, but viewing depends on the published link and Synthesia’s service. |
| Embed | The embed loads Synthesia’s hosted player and can show edits after the video is reshared. | Updates are convenient, but playback depends on the hosted service and the access settings in effect. |
| SCORM package | The package embeds Synthesia’s player in an LMS. The guide describes completion and quiz-score tracking in documented circumstances. | Useful for LMS workflows; the publishing guide identifies SCORM as an Enterprise feature. |
| Downloaded MP4 | The downloaded video is a static file, not a live connection to the hosted player. | You can distribute the file independently, but after edits you must download the new version and replace older copies yourself. |
How updates and link deletion affect viewers
Synthesia’s publishing documentation says that embeds, a project’s share-page link, and SCORM packages load the hosted player and automatically show the latest edits once you reshare the video. Creating a new draft version alone does not publish that change. By contrast, an MP4 already downloaded or copied elsewhere remains unchanged until you replace it.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Those routes remain unavailable until the link is recreated. This is an important distinction if the video is embedded in a site or assigned in a course: removing the link can affect every destination using that link, not just the share page.

Access controls and offline limits
The publishing guide describes controls for managing who can reach hosted content. Admins can restrict embeds by domain, disable public project pages, and require authentication. Per-video settings described in the guide include SSO, password protection, and browser-language defaults for multilingual videos. Availability varies by plan.
A fully self-contained offline SCORM package that avoids the Synthesia-hosted player is not a standard feature according to the publishing guide. If a course must continue to play without depending on Synthesia’s publishing service, the documented SCORM route does not meet that requirement; a downloaded MP4 is the more portable option, though it loses hosted update behavior and requires manual replacement.

Choosing between hosted delivery and a downloaded file
- Choose a hosted route when centrally managed playback, reshared updates, access controls, or LMS tracking matter more than independence from Synthesia’s service.
- Choose an MP4 when portability and distribution under your own control matter more than automatic updates. Plan to replace every distributed copy when the video changes.
- Use the API for automation when your workflow needs programmatic video creation or integration. Treat playback and publishing as separate decisions rather than assuming API access provides an independent player.
The right option depends on who controls the destination and whether the video must remain available independently of Synthesia. Hosted playback reduces manual update work, while a static file offers greater distribution independence at the cost of maintaining versions yourself.
Player ownership is separate from video-use rights
Ownership of the service components and ownership of customer content are separate questions from what you are allowed to do with a finished video. Synthesia’s licensing guidance dated July 23, 2026 says permitted uses depend on whether a video uses a stock, synthetic, or custom avatar, and distinguishes permitted from restricted uses. Check the current licensing policy for your avatar type and intended use before publication or commercial use.
