The biggest trade-offs to weigh before switching are paying for several months upfront, possible slowdowns for heavy data use in busy areas, and limits that can matter for hotspot use or travel. You can reduce the risk by checking your phone and testing service before moving your number.
What changes when you switch from T-Mobile to Mint?
Mint is a prepaid mobile service that says it uses the T-Mobile network. That shared network does not establish that Mint performs identically to T-Mobile in every place or under every network condition. Your result can depend on the locations you use, indoor signal, congestion, and the terms of your plan.

Mint publishes coverage estimates of 98% of Americans for 5G and 99% for 4G LTE. These are Mint’s figures, and its coverage page says actual availability and performance vary. Check Mint’s coverage map for the places that matter rather than treating a national estimate as a guarantee.

| Plan | Introductory monthly equivalent | Three-month service subtotal before taxes and fees |
|---|---|---|
| 6GB | $15/month | $45 |
| 17GB | $20/month | $60 |
| 23GB | $25/month | $75 |
| Unlimited | $30/month | $90 |
These totals multiply Mint’s displayed monthly equivalents by the three-month term; they are not the final checkout total. Mint says full-price options apply after the initial offer, so compare the renewal term and total due with your current T-Mobile bill before porting. Prices and plan terms can change; confirm them on Mint’s plan page.
Workaround: compare the bill you will actually pay
- Check the three-month checkout amount, including taxes and fees, rather than judging the plan by its monthly equivalent.
- Look at your current bill and estimate your total Mint cost after the introductory period, including how often you will need to renew.
- Choose a plan based on your normal monthly data use, not just the lowest advertised price.
Trade-off 2: Heavy use may mean slower data in busy places
Mint says Unlimited customers who use more than 50GB in a month may notice reduced speeds for the rest of that billing cycle in certain locations when the network is busy. The wording is conditional: it does not say that every customer is slowed immediately upon crossing 50GB, or that a slowdown occurs everywhere. Mint also says Unlimited video streams in SD.

Workaround: check your usage and plan for peak demand
- Review your recent mobile-data use in your phone settings or carrier account. If it regularly exceeds 50GB, treat Mint Unlimited’s stated threshold as a relevant risk.
- Consider when and where you rely on mobile data. A threshold may matter more if you often stream or download in busy places late in a billing cycle.
- Use Wi-Fi for large downloads when practical, and avoid assuming that “Unlimited” means unchanged speeds in every circumstance.
Mint’s current terms are on its plan page; check them again before enrolling because plan details may change.
Trade-off 3: Hotspot and travel needs can expose limits
Mint says its Unlimited plan includes up to 20GB of hotspot data. If you tether regularly, that allowance may be the more important limit than the plan’s headline data amount. Mint’s help page says customers can buy additional data in 5GB or 10GB increments through the app, online account, or text, using funds in the Mint wallet. The page does not establish a stable top-up price, so check the current amount before relying on extra data.

International use also needs a separate check. Mint’s acceptable-use policy says excessive roaming may be restricted at Mint’s discretion. Review destination-specific international terms and the acceptable-use policy before depending on the line abroad.
Workaround: match the plan to how you connect
- Estimate your monthly hotspot use and compare it with the included 20GB before switching to Unlimited.
- If you expect to exceed the allowance, check the current price and availability of 5GB or 10GB top-ups in your account before treating them as a solution.
- For international trips, confirm the terms for your destination and intended usage instead of assuming domestic plan allowances apply abroad.
Check coverage and phone compatibility before porting
For coverage, check home, work, indoor locations, and regular travel routes on Mint’s map. Mint advertises an app-based seven-day trial kit, which can help you test service before moving your number. Try the places and activities that matter to you, including indoor and outdoor use. A short trial cannot establish how service will behave in every seasonal, congestion, or travel condition.

For your phone, Mint requires an unlocked, compatible device for bring-your-own-phone service. 5G access also requires a 5G-capable phone and 5G coverage. Ask T-Mobile about your phone’s unlock status, then check the exact model using Mint’s compatibility checker before ordering a SIM or porting your number. A replacement phone is only a consideration if your current one cannot be unlocked or is incompatible.

Set support expectations and make a go/no-go decision
Mint lists human phone support seven days a week, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific time. That describes its stated phone-support availability, not how quickly a particular issue will be resolved. Check whether those hours and contact options fit the help you expect to need.
