For a YouTube-only prerecorded loop, OBS on a spare PC can play the video repeatedly and send it straight to YouTube. Switchboard Live adds a cloud routing layer for sending an encoder feed to selected destinations, but it does not store prerecorded videos or replace the local encoder that plays them. If you want a cloud-run YouTube loop instead of keeping a PC on, StreamNeo is another option: upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

Choose direct OBS if YouTube is your only destination and you are comfortable running and monitoring a local encoder. Choose Switchboard if you need its multi-destination routing or other workflow controls. If the requirement is a loop that continues while your home computer is off, a local OBS setup does not meet it; consider a cloud service such as StreamNeo instead.
How do I loop a video in OBS and send it to YouTube?
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Recheck your channel’s current status before setup.
- Add the video in OBS. Add a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable its Loop setting. For a playlist of clips, OBS offers a VLC Video source with a loop-playlist option; the VLC libraries must be installed for that source to appear.
- Set YouTube as the stream destination. In YouTube’s live control room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the encoder workflow. In OBS, configure the stream service and enter those values. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if exposed.
- Set output for the source and connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS where available, CBR, and a two-second keyframe frequency. Choose a bitrate for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check that your sustained upload capacity can support it. For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance lists 5 Mbps recommended at 1080p30; at 1080p60 it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular PC or connection can deliver a stable stream.
- Test before going live. Test with representative motion and audio, verify that the file loops as intended, and watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and messages. OBS performance depends on the PC, encoder settings, source format, and network; do not assume a spare machine is adequate without testing the actual workload.
- Plan for the replay separately. Keep a local recording backup if you need an archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Consider ending and restarting shorter sessions if a replay matters.
How do I route an OBS loop through Switchboard Live?
- Create the Switchboard workflow. In Switchboard, create a workflow and Stream Group, connect YouTube and any other destinations you want, and copy the workflow’s stream URL and key.
- Point OBS at Switchboard. In OBS, choose the Custom stream service and paste in Switchboard’s URL and key. Switchboard’s setup guide recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe rate, and 30 or 60 fps; its OBS examples are generic, so adjust settings for your upload speed and destination requirements.
- Add the loop source in OBS. Add the prerecorded file as a Media Source and enable repeat looping. Switchboard does not hold the prerecorded video for playback; the encoder must keep sending it.
- Confirm the incoming feed. Use the Switchboard confidence monitor to verify that the encoder feed is arriving before starting the selected destination or destinations.
- Confirm continuous-stream terms. Switchboard’s current pricing page lists 24/7 Streams under Enterprise, but shows no public price. Check directly with Switchboard that your plan and limits cover the duration you need.
What should you check before running a long loop?
Rights and YouTube rules
You need the necessary rights for both live and archived content, including music, and must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and other applicable requirements. Repeating a video does not give you permission to rebroadcast its audio or footage. A loop is not an exception to copyright or channel rules.
Connection, encoding, and monitoring
- Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, but test against actual sustained upload capacity.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends, and test representative audio and movement before starting.
- Monitor stream health and messages during operation. A stable file does not guarantee a stable encoder or network connection.
- Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy; do not rely on one stream longer than 12 hours to produce a complete YouTube archive.
What does each approach cost?
A direct OBS-to-YouTube setup avoids a Switchboard license, though it still uses your own computer and internet connection. Switchboard’s pricing page describes monthly or annual seat-based licenses and places 24/7 Streams under Enterprise, but does not show a price. A meaningful Switchboard cost comparison therefore requires a current quote and confirmation of the plan’s continuous-stream limits.
