At 5 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 202.5 GB of data before protocol overhead; a VPS plan with only 100 GB of monthly transfer will fall short. Compare the plan’s outbound allowance with your video’s actual bitrate, and confirm with the provider that continuous streaming is permitted and its network can sustain that rate.
How much bandwidth does a continuous pre-recorded YouTube stream use?
Estimate monthly outbound data from the stream bitrate and duration. These are simple decimal-unit calculations, not provider measurements: bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000 gives gigabytes. Allow extra headroom for protocol overhead and reconnects.
| Example stream setting | YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate | Approximate outbound data for 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 202.5 GB before overhead |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 243 GB before overhead |
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps | About 324 GB before overhead |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | About 5.29 TB before overhead |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | About 6.43 TB before overhead |
| 4K/2160p30 | 42 Mbps | About 15.88 TB before overhead |
| 4K/2160p60 | 50 Mbps | About 18.9 TB before overhead |
The H.264 recommendations are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. YouTube lists lower recommendations for AV1 and H.265 at the same resolutions, so identify the codec and bitrate your encoder will actually send rather than sizing a VPS from resolution alone. Recommendations are guidance, not a guarantee that every stream needs precisely that sustained rate.

| Provider and location | Published plan | Listed monthly transfer | What it means for streaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPSWala, Indian nodes including Mumbai | VPS 2: ₹298/month; 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB NVMe | 100 GB | Below the roughly 203 GB arithmetic estimate for 5 Mbps over 30 days, before overhead. The lower ₹149 plan lists 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 10 GB NVMe, but its transfer allowance is not stated in the reviewed summary. Rates exclude GST. |
| Endercloud, Mumbai | INDIA-VPS-8GB: ₹999/month; 3 vCore, 8 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe | 2 TB | Its listed allowance is substantially larger than the 5 Mbps estimate. The provider lists network speed up to 1 Gbps; that port claim does not prove sustained usable egress for a continuous stream. |
| VirtVPS, Mumbai | IN-1: $5.99/month; 2 vCore, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe | 500 GB | Above the basic 5 Mbps estimate, but the plan page does not confirm streaming permission or sustained performance. Higher plans list up to 4 TB at $32.99/month. |

How to choose a VPS for a 24/7 YouTube stream
- Set the intended output first. Choose resolution, frame rate and codec, then determine the video bitrate. YouTube’s table varies by those settings; there is no single bandwidth number suitable for every stream.
- Calculate a month’s transfer. Use bitrate × seconds ÷ 8 to estimate bytes, convert to decimal GB or TB, and leave headroom for overhead and reconnects. Compare that estimate with the plan’s monthly outbound-transfer allowance.
- Ask the provider specific questions before paying. Confirm continuous outbound streaming is allowed, how bandwidth is counted, whether overages or throttling apply, and whether the actual node is in the location you need. Ask whether it can sustain your chosen bitrate, not only what port speed it advertises.
- Check the real cost. Confirm taxes, renewal pricing, bandwidth accounting and location availability. VPSWala explicitly says its listed rates exclude GST.
- Plan for operations. A self-managed VPS requires you to configure and maintain the streaming software and server. Decide how you will detect a stopped process or dropped YouTube connection and restart it.
Configure the encoder around YouTube’s requirements
YouTube recommends choosing a quality your connection can support, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health. Include representative audio and movement in a test; a static image or silent segment may not reveal the same issues as the real playlist. YouTube’s guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. It identifies RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols, CBR encoding, H.264/H.265/AV1 video options and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube transcodes a live input into output formats for viewers. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Use YouTube Studio’s stream health indicators during the test and live session. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate” and “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” These are from YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions,” accessed October 3, 2026.
Copyright, reused content and channel rules
A video playing continuously does not change its rights status or make it original. Use footage, music and other material you own or have permission to stream. A stream can still receive a copyright claim or be interrupted if its content is not authorized. Separately, meeting the technical requirements for a live feed does not establish eligibility for monetization: reused or repetitive content may raise channel-level policy issues. Review YouTube’s current rules for the channel and the specific material before scheduling a continuous stream.

Common problems and what to check
- The stream stops when the transfer allowance is reached: compare actual monthly egress with the plan’s allowance, including headroom; upgrade or lower the outgoing bitrate if needed.
- YouTube reports unstable or insufficient input: test the VPS route at the intended bitrate, use a representative stream test, and inspect YouTube’s stream health. A provider’s advertised port capacity alone does not establish sustained performance.
- The stream drops and does not return: check that the encoder process is still running and that its restart/reconnect behavior is configured. Ask the VPS provider what network interruptions or maintenance could affect the instance.
- The listing looks affordable but checkout costs more: verify GST, other taxes, renewal rates and any transfer overage terms; listed headline prices are not necessarily checkout totals.
- The stream is blocked or claimed: review the rights for every video and audio track and resolve any YouTube notices; a VPS cannot grant content permission.
