Log in and capture the protected page in the same Selenium WebDriver session. After the site completes its authorized login flow, navigate to the page, wait for an element that confirms its content is ready, and save the screenshot with driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png"). A successful page navigation alone does not prove that later JavaScript updates have finished.
Capture the page in the authenticated browser session
The example below uses Selenium’s Python API with Chrome. Replace the example URL, form field names, submit selector, and success locator with ones that match the site. The sample assumes that the site permits this automated access and that your account is authorized to view the page.

If the site requires an authorized MFA step or another login action, implement that site’s normal flow rather than trying to bypass it.

Make the wait prove the right page is ready
Selenium navigation commands wait for a document readiness state—by default, complete—but that does not guarantee that JavaScript-driven content has finished updating. As the Selenium Project explains, “The readyState only concerns itself with loading assets defined in the HTML, but loaded JavaScript assets often result in changes to the site, and elements that need to be interacted with may not yet be on the page when the code is ready to execute the next Selenium command.” Selenium’s waiting-strategies guide recommends synchronization such as explicit waits.

Choose a condition that establishes both authentication and readiness for your task: for example, a distinctive heading or an authenticated control on the protected page. A generic element that also appears on the login or error screen can make the script capture the wrong view. The locator in the example is illustrative; the target site’s DOM determines the appropriate one.
- Prefer a condition over a fixed sleep. An explicit wait continues when the condition becomes true and stops waiting when its timeout expires.
- Keep implicit and explicit waits separate. Selenium warns that mixing them can produce unpredictable wait times.
- Handle redirects deliberately. If login redirects to another URL, wait for a page-specific success element after the redirect before navigating to the protected page or taking the screenshot.
Choose the screenshot scope
driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png") captures the current window as a PNG. Selenium also documents taking a screenshot of an individual element. Use a window capture when the surrounding browser viewport matters; use an element capture when you need only a particular component and can identify it reliably after login. Do not assume that this method produces a full-page image: the cited Selenium references do not establish a cross-browser full-page guarantee. If you need the entire document rather than the current window, verify the behavior supported by your selected browser and driver.
Handle sessions and cookies carefully
The usual workflow is to complete the site’s intended login in the active WebDriver session, then navigate to the protected page in that same session. Selenium’s Python API provides access to cookies visible to the current WebDriver instance, and Chromium and Firefox driver APIs include cookie-addition methods. Those APIs do not make arbitrary cookie copying a universal login shortcut. Whether a cookie works depends on details such as its domain, path, expiry, security attributes, and the site’s authentication design. See the Python Chrome WebDriver API reference.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The screenshot shows the login screen. The login may have failed, the session may have expired, or the protected-page request may have redirected. Inspect the current URL and wait for a distinctive authenticated-page element before saving.
- The page is present but its content is missing. Document navigation may have completed before client-side updates. Replace a generic or early condition with an explicit wait for the content that must appear in the capture.
- The wait times out. Check that the selector matches the live page, that the element is visible rather than merely present, and that login or MFA completed. The correct timeout and condition depend on the site.
- The script is slow or waits unpredictably. Avoid combining implicit and explicit waits; Selenium warns that their interaction can make timing unpredictable.
- The image omits content below the viewport. The documented window screenshot is not a cross-browser promise of full-page capture. Check the selected browser and driver API for a supported full-page method or capture the relevant element instead.
- Cookie reuse does not authenticate. A cookie may be scoped or expired, or the site may use other session mechanisms. Use the authorized login flow in the active session unless you have a site-specific, permitted reason to handle cookies directly.
