A job offer in Switzerland does not by itself let an Indian citizen work there. For ordinary employment, the Swiss employer generally applies for authorization and must establish that the applicant meets the requirements for a qualified third-country worker. After approval, the worker must obtain the required entry visa and register in Switzerland before starting work.
Who can qualify for a Swiss work permit?
Indian citizens are treated as third-country nationals under Switzerland’s work-admission system. The ordinary route is selective: it is generally intended for managers, specialists and other qualified workers, rather than being an open work-permit route for anyone with a Swiss job offer.

Qualifications and experience
The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) describes a typical qualified applicant as having a university or other higher-education degree and several years of professional experience. Depending on the occupation, special training combined with several years of relevant experience may also be considered. Authorities assess the individual profile, including the CV, education certificates and employment references; meeting a general description does not guarantee approval.

SEM says the applicant needs a firm offer from a Swiss employer. The employer normally submits the application to the cantonal authority responsible for the labour market. The employment contract should be signed by both sides and make its effect conditional on the authorities granting the work permit.

What the employer must establish
The employer’s case must address more than the candidate’s qualifications. Under SEM’s admission criteria, the employer generally has to show:
- Recruitment precedence: genuine efforts were made to find a suitable candidate in Switzerland or the EU/EFTA. Supporting evidence can include advertisements through relevant channels and a list of candidates, with brief explanations of why they lacked the required qualifications. Some vacancies also need to be registered with a regional employment centre, depending on the profession and unemployment threshold.
- Suitable employment conditions: salary, social-security contributions and other conditions are customary for the region, occupation and sector.
- Economic interest: the application explains why admitting this worker is in Switzerland’s overall economic interest.
- Quota availability: a place must be available under the applicable annual quota. A place in the quota does not establish eligibility or guarantee approval.
What is Switzerland’s 2026 quota for Indian workers?
The Federal Council decided on 19 November 2025 to keep the 2026 quota for qualified workers from third countries unchanged. It is a national ceiling for third-country nationals as a group, not a separate allocation for Indian citizens.
| Permit type | 2026 national quota | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| B residence permits | 4,500 | Federal Council of Switzerland figure for qualified third-country workers in 2026; not reserved for Indians. |
| L short-stay permits | 4,000 | Federal Council of Switzerland figure for qualified third-country workers in 2026; not reserved for Indians. |
| Total | 8,500 | Federal Council of Switzerland national maximum for qualified third-country workers and specialists in 2026. |
These figures are ceilings, not a promise that an individual application will be approved. Eligibility and the employer’s case still have to meet the applicable requirements.
How does the application process work?
- Secure a genuine Swiss job offer. Confirm that the employer is prepared to sponsor the application and provide evidence about recruitment, qualifications and employment conditions.
- The employer files with the canton. The employer sends the application and supporting documents to the competent cantonal employment or immigration authority. The responsible office and filing requirements depend on the workplace canton.
- The canton reviews the case, then SEM conducts federal review. The canton screens the application and makes a preliminary decision. Cases approved at cantonal level are submitted to SEM for federal review. SEM’s decision is sent to the employee and the relevant authorities; that decision is not itself permission to enter Switzerland.
- Apply for the entry visa if required. India is listed by SEM as visa-required for stays both under and over 90 days. A work authorization and an entry visa are separate steps.
- Enter Switzerland and register locally. Register with the competent local authority at the Swiss place of residence within 14 days after arrival. SEM says the worker may begin employment only after registration.
How long can processing take?
SEM’s undated FAQ, accessed in 2026, says that in its experience full processing generally takes six to eight weeks. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed service standard; complex cases, a first application by an employer or special circumstances may take longer.

What documents does an Indian applicant need for the work-entry visa?
The Swiss Embassy in India’s general work-entry visa checklist includes:
- the cantonal authorization;
- a completed long-stay visa (D) application;
- the original valid passport;
- a recent photograph; and
- the visa fee.
Requirements can depend on where the applicant lives and on current consular instructions. Check the Embassy’s current checklist and appointment procedure before booking or submitting documents.

No—not as a general shortcut for a job with a Swiss employer. SEM describes a narrow third-country notification case for a person posted by an EU/EFTA-based employer who has already been integrated long-term into that country’s labour market. SEM says this is generally evidenced by holding a standard or permanent residence permit there for at least 12 months. Other categories do not qualify for notification and need the applicable Swiss permit. Ask the competent canton to assess a particular posting arrangement; nationality alone does not establish eligibility for this exception.
How can applicants avoid Swiss job and visa scams?
The Swiss Embassy in India warns about fraudulent emails and letters impersonating Swiss educational institutions or promising jobs to extract money. Verify a job offer with the Embassy if it seems suspicious. The Embassy states that visa fees are paid to the Embassy or VFS at the scheduled appointment, not through another payment route in exchange for a visa.
