Susan Kare entwarf frühe Macintosh-Icons, indem sie vertraute Bildideen auf ein winziges monochromes Pixelraster übertrug. Ihr Ziel war, Computerfunktionen mit kleinen, verständlichen Zeichen zugänglich zu machen – nicht, den Erfolg des Macintosh allein zu erklären.
Warum Kare mit Rasterpapier begann
Kare kam über ihren Highschool-Freund Andy Hertzfeld zum Macintosh-Projekt. Hertzfeld benötigte frühe Bildzeichen und regte an, Entwürfe auf Rasterpapier anzulegen. Kare beschrieb das Macintosh-Raster als 32 Pixel auf ungefähr einem halben Zoll: ein eng begrenztes Feld aus rund tausend monochromen Bildpunkten. Das war die konkrete Entwurfsfläche, keine Messung darüber, wie Nutzer auf die Icons reagierten.

Die MoMA-Sammlung dokumentiert ihre Skizzen aus den Jahren 1982–1983 als Bleistift- und Tuschearbeiten auf Rasterpapier. Kare erinnerte sich an den Beginn als ihre erste Überlegung dazu, wie man mit wenigen monochromen Pixeln Symbole schaffen könne. Die Einschränkung war zugleich eine Methode: Jede Form musste mit sehr wenigen Punkten unterscheidbar bleiben.
Wie aus einer Skizze ein Bitmap wurde
Pixel für Pixel entwerfen
Am Anfang stand eine einfache Möglichkeit, Pixel ein- und auszuschalten. Kare konnte damit Formen auf dem Raster ausprobieren, bevor sie als kleine Bildschirmgrafiken umgesetzt wurden. Sie verglich die Arbeit scherzhaft mit Nadelarbeit: Wer sticken könne, könne auch Bitmap-Grafiken entwerfen. Der Vergleich beschreibt die kleinteilige, rastergebundene Praxis, nicht eine technische Gleichheit der beiden Tätigkeiten.

Vom Raster zum Editor
Andy Hertzfeld entwickelte anschließend einen Bitmap-Editor, der die Rasteransicht vergrößerte und die zugehörigen Hexadezimalwerte erzeugte. So verband das Werkzeug die sichtbare Pixelzeichnung mit ihrer digitalen Darstellung. Die technische Umsetzung war Teamarbeit: Kare entwarf frühe Icons und Schriftbilder; Hertzfeld steuerte das Bearbeitungswerkzeug bei.
Ein zentrales Gestaltungsproblem war, eine Idee auf einer kleinen Bildschirmfläche auf den ersten Blick zu vermitteln. Die Zeichen sollten Funktionen verständlich machen, ohne vorauszusetzen, dass Nutzer programmieren oder komplizierte Tastenkombinationen auswendig lernen konnten. MoMA beschreibt Kare’s Skizzen als Beitrag zu einem visuellen Wortschatz für die frühe Mac-Oberfläche.

Welche Bildideen die frühen Mac-Zeichen vermittelten
Kare griff auf bestehende Bildtraditionen zurück und entwickelte daraus ein eigenes visuelles Vokabular. Die Stanford-Oral-History nennt unter anderem frühe MacPaint-Grafik und das Dokument-Icon; die MoMA-Sammlung bewahrt Skizzen zu GUI-Zeichen. Bei der Betrachtung solcher Icons helfen vier Fragen:
- Funktion: Welche Handlung oder welches Objekt soll das Zeichen vermitteln?
- Erkennbarkeit: Bleibt die Grundform bei geringer Auflösung und in monochromer Darstellung lesbar?
- Vertrautheit und Ton: Nutzt das Zeichen eine bekannte Bildtradition, und wirkt es einladend oder streng?
- Kontext: Ist es neben anderen Icons und Beschriftungen in der Oberfläche verständlich?
Diese Kriterien erklären, warum ein Icon nicht nur eine hübsche Miniatur sein kann: Es muss innerhalb der begrenzten Pixelzahl eine konkrete Bedienidee kommunizieren.

Woher das Command-Zeichen stammt
Für das Command-Zeichen suchte Kare nach einer freundlicheren, abstrahierten Alternative. In einem Symbollexikon entdeckte sie ein kleeblattähnliches Zeichen, das auf schwedischen Campingplatzkarten eine interessante Sehenswürdigkeit markierte. Sie übernahm diese Form als Ausgangspunkt für das Command-Symbol. Der Weg vom Kartenzeichen zur Mac-Taste zeigt Kare’s Vorgehen: eine vorhandene Symboltradition finden und für einen neuen Bedienkontext nutzbar machen.

Die institutionellen Quellen belegen Kare als zentrale Gestalterin früher Macintosh-Icons und Schriftbilder, nicht als alleinige Urheberin sämtlicher Elemente der Oberfläche. Ihre Entwürfe entstanden im Umfeld eines Teams und innerhalb einer technischen Plattform, zu der auch Werkzeuge wie Hertzfelds Bitmap-Editor gehörten. Für eine weitergehende Behauptung, Kare’s Icons hätten allein den Macintosh-Erfolg verursacht, gibt es in den hier dokumentierten Quellen keine belastbare Wirkungsstatistik.

Die MoMA-Sammlung datiert das behandelte Skizzenbuch auf 1982 und die zugehörigen Icon-Skizzen auf 1982–1983. Davon zu unterscheiden ist das Stanford-Interview: Es wurde am 8. September 2000 geführt und ist eine redigierte Oral History. Interviewdatum, Entstehungszeit der Skizzen und Kare’s Einstieg in die Macintosh-Arbeit sind unterschiedliche Angaben.
