The line “Microsoft’s best effort to catch up to Apple” comes from Jason Cross’s Macworld feature dated October 8, 2026. It is his editorial judgment, not a measured result. Whether the laptop closes the gap depends on the configuration you compare, the workload you run, and whether your software works on Windows on Arm. The price and specification facts are clear. Independent performance data is still thin.
What the machine is built on
Microsoft’s product page describes the device as “Our most powerful Surface laptop ever, built for local AI and 3D graphics.” The laptop uses NVIDIA’s RTX Spark platform, which NVIDIA describes as a combination of Blackwell graphics, a Grace CPU, and unified memory. The GPU and CPU share one memory pool, and that design is the core of Microsoft’s pitch for running large models on the device.

The maximum specifications Microsoft publishes in its Devices Blog (2026) are:
- CPU cores: up to 20.
- GPU cores: up to 6,144.
- Unified memory: up to 128 GB. Memory varies by configuration, and the portion the GPU can address is less than the total.
These are ceilings, not a base configuration. The sources do not state the lowest-spec configuration’s memory or storage, so check the configuration you intend to buy against Microsoft’s product page.

Other hardware points from Microsoft’s product page and Devices Blog:
- Display: 15-inch touchscreen. Pen input is not supported on the touchscreen.
- Ports: USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, an SD card reader, and a headphone jack.
- Charging: magnetic USB-C charging.
- Storage: the product page describes removable storage. Confirm what that means for the configuration you buy before relying on it.

Microsoft’s AI claims, and what they measure
Model size and the petaflop figure
- Models over 120 billion parameters. Microsoft states the laptop can run models exceeding 120 billion parameters locally (Devices Blog, 2026). This is Microsoft’s stated capability, not an independent benchmark, and it is not a guarantee that every model of that size will run at a usable speed.
- Up to 1 petaflop of AI performance. Microsoft cites this figure as theoretical FP4 performance using sparsity. It is a peak theoretical number, not sustained throughput on a real model.
Head-to-head AI figures from Microsoft
Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog (2026) compares selected RTX Spark Windows PCs with a 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro:
Rank #3
- A PREMIUM PERFORMANCE LAPTOP — Ready for work, school, and creativity. Built for busy days, big projects, and nonstop multitasking. Run video calls, school and work apps, 20+ browser tabs, and AI tools at the same time without slowing down.
- WITH AI BUILT IN — With a dedicated AI chip (Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite), this Copilot+ PC[5] on Windows 11 helps you work smarter and faster. Prompt, create, and automate with ease - ready for even your most demanding tasks.
- A 13.8" TOUCHSCREEN YOU'LL ACTUALLY USE — Sharp colors, real detail, smooth 120Hz scrolling on the PixelSense touchscreen[1] with LCD display[2]. Tap, scroll, or pinch to zoom - whichever feels right for streaming, editing photos, or daily work.
- 20 HOURS OF BATTERY (LEAVE THE CHARGER) — Up to 20 hours of video playback[3] on a single charge. Work from a coffee shop, take it to class/work, or binge an entire season on a long flight — it'll keep up.
- THE PORTS YOU NEED — Two USB-C / USB4[4] ports for fast charging, big file transfers, or hooking up to three 4K monitors when you want a full desktop. Wi-Fi 7 keeps you online and fast wherever you are.
| Workload | Microsoft’s figure | Comparison system | Test basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to first token | 2.1x faster | 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro | Microsoft-commissioned testing on selected preproduction systems |
| AI image generation | 4.3x faster | 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro | Microsoft-commissioned testing on selected preproduction systems |
| AI video generation | 6.2x faster | 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro | Microsoft-commissioned testing on selected preproduction systems |
Microsoft’s October 7, 2026 Windows announcement describes the language-model tests as using a Qwen3.5 27B model with llama.cpp. These figures answer a narrow question about specific AI tasks on Microsoft’s test systems. They do not measure battery life, noise, or overall value. The comparison Macworld makes uses a different Apple configuration, the 16-inch M5 Max, so the two sets of results should not be merged.

Macworld’s comparison pairs two configurations. The table reproduces those values as Macworld reported them.

The $1,100 price gap is not a like-for-like difference, because the Apple configuration has twice the storage. Macworld also cautions that the two architectures count cores differently, so the CPU and GPU numbers cannot be compared directly, and that comparable performance figures are hard to find. Read the table as a snapshot of two configurations Macworld chose, not as a current price quote or a controlled test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSoftware and compatibility
The Surface Laptop Ultra runs Windows on Arm, so Arm-native apps run directly, and Macworld notes that Prism translation covers apps not built for Arm. Compatibility is the question most likely to decide the purchase, and it depends on your own tools rather than on the hardware specifications.

For developers, Microsoft’s Dev Box materials name Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub CLI, GitHub Copilot, WSL, Python, and Node as part of a related workflow. Microsoft does not state that these tools are optimized specifically for this laptop, so test your own build and toolchain.
What remains unknown
Microsoft’s product page says battery tests were run in September 2026 on preproduction software and hardware. As of October 9, 2026, the coverage and documentation available do not include independent battery, thermal, or retail-unit benchmark results. Macworld names the following as open questions:
- Battery life under real use
- Sustained performance and thermal behavior
- Fan noise
- Keyboard and trackpad quality
- Webcam quality and build quality
Until independent tests appear, treat Microsoft’s figures as the manufacturer’s own test results.

Who should weigh it, and what to check first
The Surface Laptop Ultra makes the most sense if you want a Windows machine with a touchscreen and large unified memory for local model work or 3D and creative software. It deserves more caution if your workflow is built around macOS, if you need pen input, or if you need proven battery life for travel.
- Choose the exact configuration and confirm its memory and SSD capacity on Microsoft’s product page.
- Estimate how much of the memory your target model needs, and check that it fits within the GPU-addressable share, which is smaller than the total.
- List your applications, plugins, drivers, and peripherals, and confirm Windows on Arm support for each.
- Confirm the price and availability for your region at checkout, since the sources give a $0.99 difference between Microsoft’s own figures.
- If portability matters, wait for independent battery and thermal results before buying.
The Apple comparison is only useful when the configurations and workload are the same. Otherwise, the answer to whether the Surface Laptop Ultra catches up depends on the work you do.
