The strongest Surface Laptop 5 alternatives depend on what you want to keep: Dell’s XPS 13 is the closest conventional Windows ultraportable, the MacBook Air M5 is a compelling option if macOS works for you, the ASUS Zenbook A14 prioritizes light weight and OLED, and Framework Laptop 13 stands out for upgradeability. Surface Laptop 5 remains a 13.5- or 15-inch Windows laptop with a 3:2 touchscreen and 12th Gen Intel processors, but it is no longer Microsoft’s current generation.
What the Surface Laptop 5 offers
Microsoft sold the Surface Laptop 5 in 13.5-inch and 15-inch sizes, both with 3:2 touchscreens and 12th Gen Intel Core processors. Microsoft describes the processors as Intel Core i5 or i7 options built on the Intel Evo platform. The 13.5-inch screen is 2256 × 1504 at 201 PPI; the 15-inch screen is 2496 × 1664, also at 201 PPI. Microsoft’s specifications list up to 18 hours of typical device usage for the 13.5-inch model and up to 17 hours for the 15-inch model. Those are manufacturer estimates, not results from a standardized independent battery test.

Microsoft has since announced newer Surface Laptop models: 13.8- and 15-inch Snapdragon X2 models in June 2026, followed by a 13-inch Snapdragon X2 Plus model in September. The announcements set starting MSRPs at $1,599 for the 13.8- and 15-inch line and $1,199 for the 13-inch model. Microsoft said the 13-inch model would begin shipping in select markets on October 13, 2026, a date still in the future on October 9. The new models are useful context if you are deciding whether to buy an older Laptop 5 or consider a newer Surface, but they are not the alternatives compared below. Microsoft’s June announcement gives up to 20 hours of battery life for the 13.8-inch model and up to 19 hours for the 15-inch model; its September announcement claims up to 22.5 hours for the 13-inch model. These are Microsoft claims, not directly comparable test results.
Which Surface Laptop 5 alternative fits your priorities?
| Priority | Consider | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A conventional Windows ultraportable | Dell XPS 13 (2026) | Check the specific processor, ports, screen, memory and storage configuration; its battery figures use different methods depending on source. |
| macOS is acceptable | MacBook Air M5 | It is a platform change, not a Windows-compatible replacement. |
| Light Windows-on-Arm laptop with OLED | ASUS Zenbook A14 | Confirm your apps and peripherals work with the exact Arm configuration. |
| Upgradeability is a priority | Framework Laptop 13 | It is a more specialized choice than a direct Surface-style substitute; check the current generation and local configuration. |
Dell XPS 13 (2026): the closest Windows alternative
The XPS 13 is the most straightforward choice if you want a premium, compact Windows laptop rather than a change of operating system. Dell advertises a 2.5K touch display and a starting weight of 2.2 lb. Its product comparison page says up to 17 hours of streaming, which is Dell’s own estimate and should not be treated as equivalent to an independent test. Dell’s XPS comparison is the place to confirm the available processor and configuration for your market.

- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
Tom’s Guide tested the 2026 XPS 13 at 14 hours 29 minutes in its battery test and named it the Windows alternative in its 13-inch comparison. That test result and Dell’s streaming estimate use different methods, so the figures do not establish a head-to-head battery winner against Surface Laptop 5. Tom’s Guide’s comparison provides its test context. Compare equivalent RAM and storage, and inspect the port selection and screen configuration before choosing; the available configuration can vary by market.
MacBook Air M5: a strong alternative only if macOS suits you
Tom’s Guide named the MacBook Air M5 its overall 13-inch pick in its comparison. It reports a 2.7 lb weight, a 13.6-inch 2560 × 1664 display and 15 hours 37 minutes in its battery test. These are figures from that publication’s 2026 coverage, not a direct Surface Laptop 5-versus-MacBook test. Read the comparison and test details here.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
The deciding question is software compatibility: macOS is not Windows, so confirm that your required applications, workplace tools and peripherals are supported before switching. If you need Windows specifically, the MacBook Air is not a replacement even if its size or battery test result appeals.

ASUS Zenbook A14: portability and OLED on Windows-on-Arm
Windows Central’s 2026 Windows-on-Arm guide names the ASUS Zenbook A14 as a runner-up for portability and OLED. A reviewer report cited by that guide records 12 hours of regular use, but that is not a controlled comparison with Surface Laptop 5 or the other laptops here. Windows Central’s guide explains its recommendation.

Because this is a Windows-on-Arm option, verify that the exact model’s processor, memory and storage meet your needs and that your essential apps and peripherals work on Arm. Compatibility can depend on the app or device, so a general Windows label alone does not settle the question.

Framework Laptop 13 is worth considering if the ability to upgrade or repair components is more important to you than finding the closest match to Surface Laptop 5’s design. Tom’s Guide calls out the Framework in its compact-laptop coverage for upgradeability; that makes it a priority-specific option, not a universal winner or a direct Surface clone. See Tom’s Guide’s comparison coverage.
Framework configurations and generations can change. Confirm the current generation, what is upgradeable in the particular configuration, and local availability before ordering; the cited coverage does not establish a configuration-matched price or a direct performance comparison with Surface Laptop 5.
Quick Recap
How to compare before you buy
- Match the platform to your software. For Windows, start with the XPS 13 or investigate Arm compatibility for the Zenbook A14. Choose the MacBook Air only if your apps and workflow suit macOS.
- Compare like-for-like configurations. Match memory and storage as closely as possible, then check the exact screen, processor and ports on the local listing. No configuration-matched, date-stamped price set is established here, so there is no reliable single cheapest alternative.
- Read battery numbers by method. Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 5 figures are “typical device usage”; Dell’s XPS figure is a streaming estimate; Tom’s Guide reports its own battery tests; Windows Central’s Zenbook figure is a reviewer’s regular-use report. Do not rank these figures as if they came from one test.
- Separate claims from measurements. Microsoft said in a May 2025 announcement that a Snapdragon X Plus Surface Laptop was 50% faster than Surface Laptop 5. That is Microsoft’s claim about that product, not independent benchmark evidence and not a result for the alternatives in this comparison. Read Microsoft’s announcement.
