Yes, dumbphones are having a visible cultural moment, but there is no evidence here of a broad reversal from smartphones to basic phones. The interest is tied to digital minimalism, retro flip-phone design and attempts to curb screen time. Global feature-phone sales remain substantial, but the market has been declining as buyers in developing countries upgrade to smartphones.
What the comeback looks like—and what the numbers show
“Dumbphone” is an informal label. People use it for basic phones, feature phones with some connected functions, and sometimes smartphones deliberately set up with fewer distractions. That makes trend claims easy to blur: cultural visibility, interest in switching and actual handset sales are different things.

Counterpoint Research reported that feature phones accounted for about 15% of handsets sold globally in 2024: approximately 210 million devices with a reported value of $3.2 billion. The figures cover varied markets and uses, not just people in wealthy countries seeking a digital detox. Counterpoint senior analyst Yang Wang put 2024 sales at 1.7 million units in North America and 12 million in Europe; Europe’s total was concentrated largely in Central and Eastern Europe. Counterpoint Research’s market analysis describes a large but gradually declining global category as consumers in developing countries upgrade to smartphones.

HMD said its feature-phone category recorded double-digit growth in 2024 compared with 2023, while also describing the overall feature-phone market as declining. That is a company-specific result, not an industry-wide trend. HMD’s February 2025 release also said its flip-phone sales doubled globally in fiscal year 2022/2023, and that the Barbie-branded flip phone it launched with Mattel in 2024 sold out repeatedly in the U.S. and U.K. The release did not provide audited unit counts for those products, and neither claim is a 2026 sales result. Its claim that a TikTok hashtag drew 61 million views measures attention, not purchases. HMD’s press release presents the company’s own interpretation of the trend.

Feature phones themselves are changing. In March 2026, HMD announced plans for smart-feature-phone additions including a digital wallet, video calling and an AI assistant, with an emphasis on inclusion and access. The announcement signals that “feature phone” does not necessarily mean a device with no connected tools. HMD said it would share availability and partnership details through 2026; check current rollout and local availability before treating any announced feature as something you can buy now. HMD’s 2026 announcement outlines the planned additions.
Why people are interested—and what that does not prove
Commonly reported motives include fewer notifications, less time in feeds, a more intentional relationship with technology and the appeal of retro designs. Those reasons help explain the cultural moment, but stated interest is not the same as sustained use or a measured improvement in wellbeing.

MIDiA Research frames dumbphone interest among under-25s as part of a broader wish to spend less time on screens and reconnect with offline life. Its public summary says two-thirds of consumers tried to reduce screen time in Q1 2024; it also reports that 21% turned to physical formats and 23% to in-person activities. These figures describe screen-time intentions and responses, not dumbphone adoption. MIDiA’s summary is useful cultural context, not a handset-sales count.
The Atlantic reported Mintel analyst Michael Lloy’s survey figures: 69% of 18-to-34-year-olds and 58% of adults overall were actively trying to reduce screen time. Lloy also estimated that about 6% of surveyed mobile-phone users had a dumbphone, with most of those owners barely or never using it. These are figures attributed to the analyst as reported by The Atlantic, not independently verified purchase data. The Atlantic’s October 2025 feature also describes people who found a smartphone hard to resist even after removing particular apps, and some who returned to smartphones when college, transport, banking or other services required apps.

Those personal accounts illustrate practical friction; they are not a controlled test of whether switching improves mental health, sleep, school performance or productivity. A simpler phone may reduce access to some distractions, but the evidence cited here does not establish that it produces those outcomes. Feature phones also serve practical communication and affordability needs in many markets, so global sales cannot be treated as a proxy for a Gen Z detox movement.

| Option | Distraction limits | Access and trade-offs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic feature phone | Usually the strongest limits on apps and feeds. | Check voice and SMS support, carrier bands and whether you can manage essential services without apps. | Someone who wants a replacement phone and can live without most smartphone functions. |
| App-capable or “smart” feature phone | Can offer selected connected features without the full smartphone experience. | Confirm that the exact messaging, maps, payment or other apps you rely on are supported; “smart feature phone” does not guarantee a particular app. | Someone who wants fewer options but still needs a small set of connected tools. |
| Smartphone with focus or detox controls | Software can limit use, but the smartphone and its temptations remain within reach. | Keeps familiar services and may be easier to adopt; limits depend on settings and how consistently they are used. | Someone who needs smartphone apps and wants to try restrictions before changing devices. |
| Dumbphone as a companion | Reduces smartphone access during selected outings or breaks, rather than eliminating it. | Requires carrying two devices and keeping the smartphone available for maps, payments, work or emergencies. | Someone who wants defined offline periods but still depends on a smartphone. |
Check compatibility before buying
For a basic phone, verify support with your carrier before purchasing: network bands, voice service and SMS availability can vary by model, carrier and country. An older listing may rely on 2G or 3G networks that have been retired in your area. Also check whether you need an app for everyday tasks such as banking, transport or payments, and whether your intended phone can handle them. A phone advertised as a feature phone may have connected functions, but the name alone does not confirm compatibility with a particular service.

If you are unsure whether you want a permanent switch, test a lower-friction change first: use focus controls, leave the smartphone behind for a planned outing, or try a companion device for a defined period. Treat that as a personal trial, not proof that one approach works for everyone.
So, are dumbphones trendy in 2026?
They are culturally visible and appealing to a niche of people drawn to simpler routines or retro design. The available figures support interest, individual product demand and a sizable global feature-phone market; they do not show a mass return to basic phones. The practical question is less whether the trend is real than whether the device’s limits suit your needs—and whether you can reliably use it where you live.
