A supply chain yard may benefit from an AI and IoT upgrade when staff rely on manual asset searches, stale status records, slow gate decisions, or inefficient routing. The practical goal is not to add sensors for their own sake: it is to connect yard observations to timely, traceable decisions in dispatch and yard systems. The right design depends on the site’s assets, layout, network, safety and privacy needs, and existing software.

What does an AI and IoT yard architecture do?

It creates an operating loop from observation to action. Cameras and other sensors capture events involving vehicles, trailers, containers, gates, and parking spaces. An edge layer can process time-sensitive data near the yard; a data and integration layer links observations to orders, schedules, traffic, and yard records; AI can detect assets or conditions and help generate routing or scheduling recommendations. Dashboards and dispatch workflows then put those outputs in front of staff.

For the loop to be useful, an operator should be able to trace a recommendation back through the business logic or model to the underlying observation. That means preserving asset identifiers, timestamps, location, confidence, and source information—not just displaying a status label.

A reference pattern from AWS

AWS’s Intelligent Yard Management guidance describes a reference architecture in which recorded video is annotated to train a computer-vision model. The trained model and business logic are deployed to an edge appliance, which processes live IP-camera feeds. A web application and dashboard present yard assets, while optional VPC peering connects external yard systems. AWS also describes controls such as encryption in transit and at rest, least-privilege access, enforced login, monitoring, workload distribution, and KPI monitoring. This is an example architecture, not evidence that one vendor stack fits every site.

An operations pattern from NEPHELE

NEPHELE’s Port of Koper use case describes sensors and cameras feeding computer vision that identifies free container parking spaces. A scheduling agent combines those observations with port information, freight or ERP backlog, and real-time traffic; a dispatch component presents proposed routes to staff. The project describes cloud, edge, and far-edge processing alongside a digital twin for visualization and predictive simulation.

When does a yard need an upgrade?

Consider an upgrade when the way information is collected or shared is undermining decisions. Manual tracking, inaccurate status records, low visibility, and reactive routing can make assets difficult to locate and leave teams working from incomplete or outdated information. Depending on the operation, those gaps may contribute to gate or dock congestion, missed moves, or poor use of yard space; they are not universal problems, so establish which ones actually occur at the site.

Start with a baseline rather than an assumed return on investment. Useful measures include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Time required to locate an asset and dispatch cycle time.
  • Gate dwell, yard occupancy, and moves per shift.
  • Trailer or container inventory accuracy, including missed or duplicate moves.
  • Safety events and exception rates.

Compare the pilot against the same measures and operating conditions. The sources cited here do not establish a universal yard ROI or baseline improvement figure.

How should edge computing, cloud, and a digital twin fit together?

Put time-sensitive processing near the operation

Edge computing places processing close to cameras or devices. It can support timely inference, maintain some local processing continuity when a wide-area connection is degraded, and reduce the need to send raw video to a central service. Fraunhofer IML describes processing sensor data on site as a way to reduce reliance on central cloud servers and network dependencies. In AWS’s example, model training takes place in cloud infrastructure while inference runs at the edge. These examples support a hybrid approach, not a rule that all computation belongs at the edge.

Use cloud resources where they fit

Cloud services can support model training and centralized applications, while edge devices handle suitable local workloads. The split should follow the required latency, network conditions, data-handling rules, and operating needs. A system should not be called real time merely because it uses AI: sensing, transmission, processing, and updates to the operational system must all meet the decision’s timing requirement.

Make the digital twin operational

A digital twin is a virtual representation of physical yard processes updated with operational data. It can support visualization, state monitoring, what-if simulation, bottleneck prediction, and coordination. Fraunhofer IML’s FAQ describes a twin as one that “maps physical processes virtually and processes real-time data directly at the point of origin, without detours via a central cloud.” Fraunhofer IML also says a twin can connect to existing yard, warehouse, and production control systems.

That connection matters: a visualization or simulation is not an operational improvement unless its inputs are sufficiently fresh and reliable and its recommendations connect to the work staff actually perform.

How should a yard choose cameras, RFID, GPS, and other sensors?

Choose sensing by the event and asset that need to be observed. Cameras can see scenes and occupancy; RFID can associate reads with tagged assets; GPS and geofencing can generate zone-entry or exit events. These methods can complement each other, and the available examples do not establish one as universally superior.

Method What it can observe Site questions to resolve
Computer-vision cameras AWS describes live IP-camera feeds for edge inference. NEPHELE describes cameras used for data capture and detecting conditions such as free parking spaces. Coverage and occlusion; day, night, and weather performance; camera placement; bandwidth; privacy and retention; model accuracy and latency; safety implications.
RAIN RFID Impinj’s 2020 description of Kaleris’s solution covers temporary and permanent tags and readers for trailer or container identification and location, including gate passage and yard or dock location. Tag attachment and durability; reader coverage; metal or other interference; read accuracy; deployment cost; connection to yard records. Treat the description as illustrative and verify current product status before relying on it.
GPS and geofencing SAP Yard Logistics for SAP S/4HANA 2024 documents GPS sensor entry and exit events that can update yard orders and related tasks. Location accuracy and update frequency; outdoor coverage; device and battery requirements; geofence definition; event reliability; whether zone-level location is precise enough.
Other IoT sensors and industrial devices NEPHELE describes industrial IoT devices on port vehicles and at strategic locations, with device-management and data-aggregation needs. Required state; ruggedness; power and connectivity; maintenance and calibration; data ownership.

For each sensor, define the event it must produce, the identifier it will use, and what happens when a read is missing or uncertain. A technology that detects a space but cannot reliably connect it to the asset or dispatch workflow may not solve the operational problem.

How can AI improve yard management?

AI can turn observations into classifications, detections, or recommendations—for example, identifying whether a parking space is free or helping prioritize a route using yard state and traffic information. Its value depends on sound process definitions, consistent identifiers, usable data, and a workflow that lets staff act on the output. AI cannot by itself repair poor records, disconnected systems, or unclear operating rules.

For consequential decisions, decide in advance whether the system recommends an action, automates it, or routes it for human review. Record overrides and exceptions so that operators can distinguish model errors from stale sensor data or process problems.

How should the architecture connect to existing systems and remain dependable?

Normalize events before operational use

Resolve asset identifiers, timestamps, location or zone, confidence, and source provenance before events reach dispatch or yard systems. Preserve their relationship to yard orders, freight or shipment records, gates, docks, and traffic data. NEPHELE describes APIs for terminal ERP backlog and real-time traffic information, with routing decisions presented to port staff. AWS describes optional connections to external yard systems, and SAP’s documented GPS-geofence workflow can update yard orders and related tasks.

Design for security, reliability, and site constraints

Device management, sensor collection and aggregation, network coverage, cybersecurity, and operational feedback belong in the architecture plan. NEPHELE identifies constraints including 5G coverage, IoT interfaces, and secure, energy-efficient edge computing. AWS’s example controls—encryption in transit and at rest, least privilege, login enforcement, monitoring, workload distribution, and reliability KPIs—are useful starting points, not a substitute for site-specific review.

Assess applicable safety, privacy, retention, access, and cybersecurity requirements for the yard and its jurisdiction. Test what the system does during network degradation, sensor failure, delayed events, and conflicting records, not just under normal conditions.

What do the published outcome figures establish?

NEPHELE’s Port of Koper use-case page lists the following project-stated figures. The page does not establish these as industry-wide results or independently validated outcomes, and its year is not stated in the reviewed page.

Figure listed for the use case How to interpret it
Up to 5% faster delivery times Project-stated target/result descriptor for the Port of Koper use case; not a general yard benchmark.
Up to 5% improvement in vehicle utilization Project-stated target/result descriptor for the Port of Koper use case; not a general yard benchmark.
Maximum of two delivery errors per day Figure listed for the Port of Koper use case; not a general yard benchmark.
Up to 5% reduction in CO2 emissions Project-stated target/result descriptor for the Port of Koper use case; not a general yard benchmark.

Use these figures as context for that project, not as a forecast for another yard. A site should define its own baseline and measurement period before estimating benefits.

What is a practical implementation sequence?

  1. Map the current process. Document how assets are identified, moved, recorded, and dispatched, and define the decision latency and accuracy the operation requires.
  2. Set a baseline. Measure relevant outcomes and identify costly exceptions such as lost assets, gate congestion, duplicate moves, or poor occupancy visibility.
  3. Bound the pilot. Choose one use case, such as trailer location, gate automation, parking-space detection, or dispatch routing.
  4. Choose sensing and conventions. Match sensors to the target asset and event, then define identifiers, timestamps, and location conventions.
  5. Test edge and connectivity conditions. Exercise local processing and network behavior under realistic yard conditions, including outages or degraded connections.
  6. Connect recommendations to work. Integrate event data with yard orders and dispatch workflows; set human review or override rules for consequential recommendations.
  7. Measure before scaling. Compare results with the baseline, document errors and exceptions, and expand only after data quality, reliability, security, and staff adoption are demonstrated.

This sequence is a practical synthesis of the documented architecture and implementation considerations; it is not a claim that a vendor tested this exact plan. For context, Fraunhofer IML’s Yard LENSE on Edge is an example associated with digital twins, on-site sensor processing, and yard-vehicle movement management. A 3 June 2024 announcement from Seatrium and M1 describes an MoU to explore 5G connectivity and yard applications including smart video analytics, AI, digital twins, and IoT; it documents exploration and partnership intent, not a completed rollout across all yards.
