Did Supermassive’s 2026 layoffs happen?
The October 5 statement and former employees’ posts reported by PC Gamer indicate that the departures were underway or completed by then. The August announcement itself was a consultation and described a maximum number of potential job losses, not a confirmed outcome.

Why is Supermassive Games making redundancies?
Supermassive described the consultation as “a necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company.” That is the studio’s stated explanation. The available reporting does not establish additional causes, and the release of a particular game should not be treated as the reason without evidence linking it to the decision.
How this round fits the studio’s recent history
Game Informer described the 2026 announcement as Supermassive’s third redundancy round in less than three years. Its retrospective reported roughly 90 jobs cut in February 2024 and said the studio anticipated up to 36 job losses in a July 2025 consultation. The 2025 figure was an at-risk estimate, not a confirmed final count; the figures from different rounds should not be added into a definitive cumulative total.
