SuperFetch is now called SysMain, and Microsoft describes it as a service that “maintains and improves system performance over time.” The official guidance reviewed here does not establish that SSD-equipped Windows PCs should disable it or that turning it off will reliably make them faster.
What SuperFetch does—and what SysMain means
SuperFetch is the older name for the Windows service now referred to as SysMain. Microsoft’s Windows Server guidance describes its role as maintaining and improving system performance over time. That description does not promise a particular speed improvement on every PC, nor does it explain a universal SSD-specific setting.

Prefetch is related terminology, but it is not interchangeable with the SysMain service. A 2020 Microsoft Q&A page records the question of whether Windows automatically disables Prefetch and SuperFetch when an SSD is present; the question itself does not establish the current default behavior.
Does an SSD mean you should disable SysMain?
No general recommendation to disable SysMain solely because a computer has an SSD is supported by the cited Microsoft material. Microsoft’s guidance for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) says SuperFetch may not improve performance in some such environments—for example, where storage is virtualized or user state is discarded—and recommends evaluating the feature in each environment. That specialized advice does not establish a rule for ordinary SSD-equipped PCs.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Microsoft also documents SysMain being disabled when Unified Write Filter (UWF) is enabled. UWF is a specialized configuration, and it disables several features alongside SysMain, including paging files, System Restore, file indexing, fast boot, and drive optimization. This bundle of changes is not an SSD-tuning recommendation for a standard Windows installation.
When to investigate SysMain
If you are seeing sustained CPU, memory, or disk activity that affects your work, identify which process or service is responsible before changing settings. SysMain can be one possibility to investigate, but an SSD alone is not evidence that it is causing a problem. Microsoft’s documented CPU-spike case applies to Windows 7 SP1 when a particular class of 64-bit application runs; it does not demonstrate a general issue on current Windows versions or SSDs.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Start by checking the storage device and its activity in Windows. Microsoft says Storage settings can show a drive’s type, capacity, and current usage, and describes drive optimization as a way to help maintain storage performance and health. These checks can help put a reported slowdown in context; they do not by themselves show that SysMain should be disabled.
How to decide whether changing it helps your PC
If you have a specific, repeatable symptom and want to test SysMain, compare the same workload with the service enabled and disabled. Keep other conditions as consistent as possible, and measure the thing you actually care about—such as startup time, application launch time, or sustained resource activity. This is a troubleshooting method, not a benchmark result: Microsoft’s guidance cited here provides no controlled, current Windows-client comparison for SSD-equipped PCs.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
- Record the symptom and the same observable measure before changing anything.
- Change one setting at a time so the comparison remains useful.
- Repeat the same workload under comparable conditions, then restore the original setting if disabling SysMain does not help or makes the symptom worse.
Do not assume the change will improve speed, reduce SSD wear, or produce a predictable drop in resource use. The available official sources do not establish those outcomes or a general percentage gain.

Microsoft’s documentation supports a broad description of SysMain’s purpose, notes that its usefulness can vary in specialized VDI environments, and documents its deactivation as part of UWF. It also includes a narrowly scoped historical Windows 7 SP1 troubleshooting case. These points do not amount to a current, controlled SSD-specific test for Windows 10 or Windows 11 client PCs.
