Super Mario RPG for Nintendo Switch is a faithful remake of the 1996 Super Nintendo adventure, refreshed with updated visuals and rearranged music while keeping its turn-based, timing-driven combat intact. Nintendo Life reviewer Alana Hagues awarded it 9/10, praising its charm and presentation; the main cautions are occasional frame drops and a challenge level that may feel modest to experienced players.
What is Super Mario RPG on Switch?
Released on 17 November 2023, this is the Nintendo Switch remake of the original 1996 Super Mario RPG, not a new entry in the series. Mario sets out after the Star Road is broken and joins Mallow, Geno, Bowser, and Princess Peach to confront the Smithy Gang. The journey ranges through forests, sewers, rivers, and other locations, mixing exploration and minigames with battles. Nintendo’s UK product page describes the premise and release details.

How faithful is the remake to the original?
Nintendo Life’s Alana Hagues characterizes the Switch version as a faithful remake of the SNES game, with refreshed visuals and music rather than a fundamental redesign. The review highlights the humor and charm that carry the adventure, as well as post-game content. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a claim that every scene or technical detail is unchanged. Read the Nintendo Life review.
The remake’s most visible modernization is its presentation. It retains the recognizable world and cast while giving the game updated visuals and new arrangements supervised by original composer Yoko Shimomura, as reported in the review. Players can switch between the original Super NES soundtrack and the new arrangements; Nintendo Life reports that the Sound Player unlocks after clearing the game. Nintendo Life’s soundtrack report attributes the unlock detail to a Nintendo of Europe social post.

What is combat like, and is it too easy?
Combat remains turn-based, with timing-based Action Commands as its defining extra layer. Pressing a button at the right moment can strengthen an attack or reduce incoming damage. Nintendo says a perfectly timed attack can hit all enemies, while a perfectly timed defense can avoid damage. Successful commands build an Action Gauge, which enables party-specific Triple Moves. If battles become difficult, the game offers a Breezy difficulty option. Nintendo’s combat description explains these mechanics.
Hagues’s review warns that the base game may feel too easy for some players, particularly those looking for a demanding RPG. For newcomers or players who prefer a gentler pace, that accessibility can make the game easier to settle into. The Breezy setting is available as an option if the fights prove challenging, but it is not a substitute for a higher-difficulty challenge for veterans.

How does the Switch remake perform?
The Nintendo Life review notes occasional frame drops in water-heavy areas and during transitions from cutscenes back into battles. These are specific caveats from the review, not the results of a broader technical test. They sit alongside the review’s overall favorable assessment of the visuals, soundtrack, humor, and post-game material.
Is it a good first Mario RPG?
It can be a welcoming starting point if you want a colorful, accessible turn-based RPG with a recognizable cast and combat that rewards timing without demanding complex systems. The adventure balances battles with exploration and minigames, and its story does not require familiarity with other role-playing games. Returning fans have a different reason to revisit it: the remake preserves the original’s structure while updating its presentation and offering soundtrack choice and post-game content.
