“Super glue for cells” refers to a research polymer designed to adhere to cell membranes—not household super glue. A 2013 report described researchers using a choline-phosphate (CP) polymer to stick red blood cells together and bind to a range of cell membranes. Tissue engineering and wound closure were suggested as possible applications, not established treatments.
What is the “super glue for cells”?
It is a synthetic polymer bearing choline-phosphate groups. In a 2013 report, the Royal Society of Chemistry described the material as a multivalent biomembrane adhesive: its repeated CP groups let the polymer bind to cell membranes. The report says the researchers used it to stick red blood cells together and found that CP-containing branched polyglycerols bound to a variety of cell membranes.

Despite the nickname, this is not cyanoacrylate household glue, nor does the report describe a consumer product. It concerns a designed research material intended to interact with biological membranes.
How was the polymer designed to stick to membranes?
The design was inspired by phosphatidylcholine (PC), a common phospholipid head group in cell membranes. The researchers proposed reversing the orientation of that head group to make choline phosphate (CP), changing the arrangement of its positive and negative charges.

Study leader Donald E. Brooks explained the idea in the RSC report: “Phosphatidyl choline [PC] is found in every cell membrane, except for some primitive bacteria, so we wondered what would happen if we were to turn the molecule around to choline phosphate [CP]? Would you get an adhesive effect because the positive and negative charges are now inverted?” The proposed charge reversal was the design rationale; the reported cell binding was the experimental observation.
What did researchers demonstrate, and what remains a possibility?
The 2013 report describes adhesion involving red blood cells and binding to a variety of cell membranes. It presents positioning cells for tissue engineering and closing wounds as potential applications. Those are prospective uses, not evidence that the polymer is an approved wound treatment or an established clinical therapy.

The report identifies the underlying paper as Xifei Yu, Xiaoqiang Yang, Sonja Horte, Jayachandran N. Kizhakkedathu, and Donald E. Brooks, “ATRP synthesis of poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl choline phosphate): a multivalent universal biomembrane adhesive,” published in Chemical Communications, DOI 10.1039/C3CC41895B. The available coverage does not establish a clinical approval or commercial product, and it does not provide a basis here for quoting a numerical adhesion strength.
Does “glue for cells” also mean fibronectin?
Sometimes the phrase describes a natural connection rather than the synthetic CP polymer. A 2001 University of Washington account used “a sort of super glue for cells” for the extracellular matrix, particularly fibronectin-containing protein fibers.

These two meanings differ in material and role:
