No. Supabase-managed database backups cover the database, not the actual files stored through the Storage API. A database backup may preserve bucket and object records in Postgres, but it does not preserve the corresponding file contents. If you use Storage, you need a separate process to copy those objects.
What a Supabase database backup does—and doesn’t—contain
Supabase distinguishes Storage metadata from the files themselves. Bucket and object metadata is held in the Postgres tables storage.buckets and storage.objects. The file contents are stored outside the database, so restoring those records alone does not restore the files. Supabase’s database overview explains that managed backups cover the database and exclude objects stored through the Storage API; its Storage quickstart describes why files are kept outside the database.

This means a database backup alone is not a complete backup of a project that uses Storage. A restore could show buckets and object entries while the actual objects are missing.

How to make a separate copy of Storage files
Supabase documents several ways to download Storage objects. Choose based on the number of files and how repeatable you need the process to be; the documentation does not prescribe one best method for every project.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Dashboard: Download individual files from the Storage section. This is suitable for a small number of objects, but it is a manual approach.
- Supabase CLI: Use the documented Storage commands to list and copy objects from a linked project. Check the current download instructions for syntax and flags before building a script around them.
- S3-compatible client: Supabase documents an S3-compatible endpoint and names AWS CLI, rclone, and Cyberduck as clients. Supabase says these tools are more efficient for downloading large collections than retrieving files individually. Validate permissions and transfer behavior with a sample before relying on a bulk workflow.
Restoring or cloning a project requires a Storage step
When restoring a database into a project, plan to copy the Storage objects separately. Supabase’s restore guidance describes separate object migration for legacy logical dashboard backups: after restoring the database, bucket and file metadata may be present even though files in the S3 buckets are absent.
Cloning does not remove this requirement. Supabase’s project clone guide says Storage objects and settings are not copied. Its paused-project recovery guidance instructs users to save the database backup and Storage objects separately before the old project is deleted, then restore the database and copy the objects into the new project.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Before deleting or losing access to the original project, download its database backup and make a separate copy of its Storage objects.
- Restore the database to the destination project.
- Copy the saved objects into the intended buckets, preserving the bucket structure your application expects.
- Test a restore with representative files and confirm that both the database records and object contents are available.
Do daily backups or point-in-time recovery cover Storage?
No: these are database recovery features, not a substitute for copying Storage objects. Supabase’s documentation describes daily database backups and point-in-time recovery (PITR), but those do not change the exclusion of Storage file contents from database backups. Backup availability and retention depend on the plan and can change; consult the current backup feature documentation and your project dashboard for the terms that apply. Supabase also notes that database backups are not available for download on Free Plan projects in its production checklist; that limitation concerns database backups, not whether Storage objects are included.
