Sundew adhesive can help cells stick in laboratory tests because researchers can process the plant’s insect-trapping secretion into a fibrous scaffold. In serum-containing assays, several mammalian cell types attached more strongly to that scaffold than to bare coverslips. The result points to a material worth studying—not a proven treatment or ready-to-use medical device.
What plant adhesive did researchers study?
The plant is a sundew, from the genus Drosera. Its gland-covered leaves produce sticky secretions that trap insects. Researchers have investigated whether processed forms of this secretion can also provide a surface for mammalian cells to attach to in tissue-engineering experiments.
A 2015 study by Yujian Huang, Yongzhong Wang, Leming Sun, Richa Agrawal and Mingjun Zhang described sundew adhesive as a naturally occurring hydrogel. The material has nanoscale structures assembled from polysaccharides. The authors proposed that divalent cations help mediate electrostatic interactions involved in assembling the network. They also reported negatively charged nanoparticles with an average diameter of 231.9 ± 14.8 nm; the particles’ role in network assembly was presumed, not definitively demonstrated. How did the secretion help cells attach?
The researchers made fibrous scaffolds from the adhesive and compared cell attachment on those scaffolds with attachment on bare coverslips. In the reported assays, the scaffold increased attachment when serum was present. The authors suggested that the material encouraged adsorption of serum proteins, which in turn supported cell attachment.
| Tested cell type | Reported attachment on scaffold compared with bare coverslip | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| MC3T3 | Approximately threefold greater | Serum present |
| NIH3T3 | Approximately 1.7-fold greater | Serum present |
| MSMC | Approximately 1.7-fold greater | Serum present |
| RSMC | Approximately 1.7-fold greater | Serum present |
These are comparisons from the specific assays in Huang and colleagues’ 2015 study, not general performance estimates for other cells or applications. The attachment advantage was not observed in the reported serum-free condition, so the scaffold should not be described as inherently adhesive to cells regardless of the surrounding medium.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What did the safety and growth tests show?
Under the study’s experimental conditions, the tested cell types showed no apparent cytotoxic activity. At adhesive concentrations up to 1% (v/v), the authors reported less than 8% inhibition in their assays. They also found no significant difference in cell proliferation over seven days between cells on the tested scaffolds and comparison surfaces.
Those results are limited to the cells, concentrations, duration and laboratory methods tested. They do not establish safety in people, clinical effectiveness, regulatory approval or suitability as a medical implant.

What limits its potential as a scaffold?
The material’s behavior changed with temperature: the study reports that both elasticity and adhesion strength declined as ambient temperature fell. It does not establish a clinical storage range or a recommended temperature for medical use.
More broadly, the findings concern laboratory-made scaffolds and cell-culture assays. They do not show that the material can support a particular tissue in a living body, that cells embedded in it will differentiate or integrate, or that it can be manufactured consistently for clinical use.

How does this fit with earlier sundew-adhesive research?
Earlier studies examined the secretion’s nanofibers and nanoparticles and reported that dried adhesive networks supported attachment and growth of PC12 neuron-like cells. A 2011 study evaluated adhesive from Drosera capensis as a support for cell growth in models relevant to neuronal, bone and vascular research. These studies add experimental context, but they remain materials and cell-culture research rather than demonstrations of a treatment.
In 2015, Ohio State biomedical engineering researcher Mingjun Zhang described a possible future use in which cells embedded in the material might grow, differentiate and integrate into tissue. That was a projection about potential, not an outcome established by the cell-attachment experiments. Chemistry World’s coverage of the work includes his comments.

What the findings mean
- Sundew secretion is a polysaccharide-rich hydrogel with nanoscale structure.
- Processed adhesive-derived scaffolds increased attachment for several tested cell types in serum-containing laboratory assays.
- The reported advantage depended on the assay conditions and was absent in the serum-free condition described.
