That confirms the feature is part of the edition, but it does not establish how many people are playing now or whether matchmaking is consistently available. The original game manual also describes LAN and direct-IP play, though its instructions predate the Extended Edition and should be treated as historical guidance.
What online multiplayer does the Extended Edition offer?
The Steam listing for Rise of Nations: Extended Edition describes full Steamworks integration, including multiplayer with ranked matches using ELO. It also lists cloud saves, achievements, and Steam trading cards as Steamworks features. The Extended Edition includes both Rise of Nations and Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots. See the Steam listing.

This is evidence that ranked online multiplayer is an advertised feature—not a live status report. The listing does not establish current player counts, lobby health, server uptime, or matchmaking reliability. So the accurate answer to “Is multiplayer alive?” is that online multiplayer is advertised, but the available information does not confirm how easy it is to find a match today.
How do online, LAN, and direct-IP play differ?
| Approach | What the documentation says | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Steamworks online | The Extended Edition listing advertises multiplayer with ranked ELO matches. | The listing does not confirm present-day matchmaking activity or reliability. |
| LAN | The original manual describes choosing a listed LAN game and selecting Join. It also describes hosting a LAN game. | This is historical documentation; it does not verify that the same options or behavior remain available in the current edition. |
| Direct Internet by IP | The original manual describes entering a host’s IP address using Join IP, and creating an Internet-hosted game. | Current availability of direct-IP play is not established by the cited sources. |
| Game observation | The original manual describes an Observe option for viewing a game over a LAN. | This is a historical manual feature, not confirmation of a current Extended Edition option. |
The manual also names GameSpy Internet Matchmaking as a connection option. That reference reflects the original manual’s period; it is not evidence that GameSpy or any particular lobby service is operating now. Its claim that games can include up to eight participants is likewise historical and should not be assumed to apply to every current edition, mode, or network setup. Read the original manual’s multiplayer section.

What should you check before trying a match?
- Confirm the edition: The Steam listing describes the Extended Edition as including the base game and Thrones and Patriots.
- Separate feature support from availability: Ranked ELO multiplayer is advertised, but current population and service status are not established.
- Use current in-game options as the practical guide: The manual’s LAN, direct-IP, and observation instructions may not match the current interface or network behavior.
- Check platform support separately from the game’s listed requirements: Steam’s page displays legacy system requirements and separately notes Steam Client support for Windows 10 and later beginning January 1, 2024.
What PC requirements does Steam list?
The Steam page displays the following requirements for the game. These are the listing’s stated specifications, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current PC configuration.
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows Vista, 7, or 8.1+ | Windows 7 or 8.1+ |
| Processor | 1.6 processor | 2.6 GHz processor |
| Memory | 1 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM |
| Graphics and DirectX | DirectX 10-capable GPU and DirectX 10 | DirectX 11+ graphics and DirectX 11 |
| Storage | 3 GB available | 5 GB available |
The Steam listing separately says the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. That client note is distinct from the game requirements shown on the page; neither statement alone establishes compatibility for a particular modern PC.
