When you cancel Suddenlink service, first check your account’s equipment return list: not every cable box needs to be sent back. For equipment marked for return, use Optimum’s current return process to get a prepaid shipping label, pack the required items, and keep the drop-off receipt. Older Suddenlink accounts may show different branding or instructions, so follow the return list and deadlines shown for your account.
Check whether your cable box must be returned
Current official return instructions are published by Optimum. Before packing anything, identify the box model and check which items your account says to return. Optimum’s equipment return instructions say Scientific Atlanta cable boxes do not need to be returned. They also list CableCARDs and certain DOCSIS 3.0, 2.0, 1.1, and 1.0 modems or gateways as exceptions, with TM1602A and TM804 identified separately. These exemptions are model-specific; do not assume they apply to every box or modem.

If an item you expected to return is missing from My Orders, or your account still uses Suddenlink branding, contact Optimum and ask which equipment is required and what instructions apply to your account.
How to return equipment by mail
- Open the return flow. Sign in, go to My Orders, and select Return item beside the equipment. Follow the prompts to get the prepaid label. The Optimum shipping instructions describe this process and say submitted returns can be tracked in My Orders.
- Pack the equipment. Use a box of your choosing. Include the equipment and any Optimum-provided remotes and power cords that came with it. Include a copy of a bill or write your name, address, and account number as directed by the return instructions.
- Attach the label. Use one return label per box and remove or cover any old shipping labels.
- Drop it off and keep proof. Take the package to Walgreens, FedEx Office, or an authorized FedEx location. Do not put it in a FedEx Drop Box. Ask for a drop-off receipt and retain it as proof of mailing.
Can you return a box at an Optimum store?
The current general return instructions emphasize the prepaid-label shipping process. An older Optimum cable-box guide describes taking a replacement box’s old equipment and power cord to an Optimum store or using a shipping label. That guide concerns replacement equipment, so do not assume an in-store return is available for every cancellation. Check your account instructions or contact Optimum before making a store trip.

Deadlines and possible unreturned-equipment charges
Optimum/Altice residential terms say provider equipment generally remains the provider’s property and must be returned promptly after service is cancelled, unless the provider gives different written instructions. The terms allow a charge under the then-current non-returned-equipment schedule and/or continued monthly service fees until the equipment is returned, collected, or fully paid for. Follow the deadline in your account or written return instructions; the available terms do not establish one universal number of days for every former Suddenlink account.
A historical Optimum schedule from circa 2017 lists a replacement cable box at $105.00 each. That figure is not established as the current charge. The residential terms refer to a then-current schedule but do not state a current cable-box price.
