The difference is whether the spacecraft enters orbit around Earth. A suborbital flight may reach space, but it lacks the velocity to achieve orbit and returns without completing one. Altitude alone does not determine whether a flight is orbital.
What makes a spaceflight orbital or suborbital?
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) defines an orbital flight as one in which a spacecraft follows a trajectory with enough velocity to place it in orbit around Earth. A suborbital flight reaches space but does not have the velocity needed to achieve orbit. In short, the distinction is about trajectory and velocity—not simply how high a vehicle travels.

That also means “space” and “orbit” are not interchangeable terms. The FAA says it does not define where space begins. Its 50-statute-mile criterion is used to recognize certain flight participants; it is not a universal legal boundary for space or the dividing line between suborbital and orbital flight. See the FAA’s Human Space Flight page and human spaceflight FAQ.
How do the flight profiles differ?
A suborbital spacecraft travels on a path that returns it without completing an orbit. An orbital spacecraft reaches a trajectory that carries it around Earth. That fundamental difference affects the mission profile, but it does not by itself establish how long a customer’s trip lasts or what the passenger experience includes.

The FAA’s public material does not provide comparable current passenger schedules, trip durations, or training requirements for these categories. Those details depend on the specific vehicle and operator, so check directly with the operator before comparing offerings.
Which commercial spaceflight examples fit each category?
FAA materials identify Blue Origin’s New Shepard and Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo with suborbital flights, and SpaceX crew missions with orbital flights. These are examples of different vehicles and mission profiles, not evidence that a passenger seat is available to book. The FAA’s human spaceflight participant records document recognized participants; they are not a booking calendar.

What should you compare before considering a trip?
First identify the trajectory category, then evaluate the particular operator and mission. The available FAA sources support the basic category distinction and describe U.S. oversight, but they do not establish current prices, seat availability, passenger preparation requirements, or comparable trip durations.

| Flight trajectory | Whether the spacecraft achieves an orbit around Earth. The FAA definitions establish the orbital and suborbital distinction. |
| Time and mission profile | Ask the operator for the current itinerary and time in flight; the FAA sources do not provide comparable passenger trip durations. |
| Passenger preparation | Ask about training and passenger requirements; the FAA sources do not establish them comparably across offerings. |
| Price and booking availability | Confirm directly with the operator. The FAA sources do not establish current prices or whether seats can be booked. |
| U.S. oversight and disclosed risk | Understand what the FAA licenses and what risks the operator must disclose to participants. |
What does U.S. FAA oversight mean for passengers?
In the United States, the FAA licenses commercial launches and reentries, works to verify vehicles operate as intended, regulates flight-crew qualifications and training, and integrates commercial space operations into the National Airspace System. Its role is not the same as certifying a vehicle as safe for passengers.

The FAA says Congress has limited its authority to regulate the health and safety of people aboard commercial human spaceflight vehicles, and that launch and reentry vehicles are not FAA-certified as safe for carrying humans. Under the U.S. informed-consent framework described by the FAA, operators must explain known and unknown risks and provide safety records for the vehicle and operator; participants must have an opportunity to ask questions. These points describe U.S. oversight and should not be assumed to apply in other jurisdictions.
