What the SUBE card does—and where to buy one
SUBE is a physical fare card used on participating public transport services. Argentina.gob.ar lists buses, subways, trains, metrobuses, trolleybuses and boats among the modes it can cover, but acceptance depends on the service and locality; the official FAQ’s locality count should not be treated as a guarantee for every route. Check SUBE’s official information for the place you plan to travel.
The official acquisition information points to an online purchase route and SUBE Points. Use the SUBE Point locator to find a nearby point of sale. The acquisition page displays a peso price, but that amount may be stale; confirm the current card price through the online channel or at the local point before paying.
How to load the card
You can add value electronically using the SUBE app, digital wallets, home banking or ATMs, or load in person at a SUBE Point. For an electronic load, placing the order and putting the value onto the physical card are separate steps: after paying, you may still need to accredit the pending load.

Electronic loading options
- App, digital wallet, home banking or ATM: Choose a supported channel and place the load order. Keep in mind that this alone may not make the value available on the card.
- SUBE Point: Ask to load the physical card in person; this is the listed in-person alternative.
Accredit an electronic load
Argentina.gob.ar’s guide published July 22, 2026 lists three ways to transfer a pending electronic load onto the card:
- Android NFC phone: In the SUBE app, open “Acreditá o consultá saldo,” then choose “Ver saldo.” Hold the card against the back of an Android phone running Android 6 or later with NFC enabled.
- Participating bus: Ask the driver to accredit the pending load using Carga a Bordo, if that service is available on the bus and in the locality. It is not offered everywhere.
- SUBE Automatic Terminal: Tap the card at a terminal to accredit the load.
These limits are stated in Argentina.gob.ar’s July 22, 2026 guide: the maximum electronic load per operation is ARS 30,000, and the maximum balance stored on a physical card is ARS 40,000. Both are changeable peso-denominated limits, so check the current official loading guidance before loading. If a load would take the card above the stored-balance maximum, the guide says the excess remains pending until you spend enough balance to make room.

How to check your SUBE balance
For a direct reading from the card, use the SUBE app’s NFC scan on a compatible Android phone or tap the card at an Automatic Terminal. The official FAQ also lists the Mi SUBE web account, telephone and in-person SUBE service as ways to check balance.
Account and web records may lag behind the card. Argentina.gob.ar’s FAQ says web balance information updates within 24 hours, while the Mi SUBE service page says balance and trip information update every 72 hours. Because the official pages give different intervals, do not rely on a single refresh time when checking a recent load or trip.

The official FAQ says: “El saldo no tiene vencimiento y va a estar disponible cuando vuelvas a viajar”—the balance does not expire and will be available when you travel again.

SUBE recommends creating an account to help protect the balance if a card is lost, stolen or broken, review travel history and discounts, and manage the card online. A 2024 government guide describes registration using a SUBE number and personal details, email validation, and final confirmation by tapping the card at a terminal or Android NFC phone; it also lists other official registration routes.

The official guidance reviewed does not clearly establish whether a visitor can register with a passport instead of an Argentine DNI, or which account functions are available without a DNI. Registration is not described as a requirement for using the card. If you want an account, ask SUBE through its current help channels whether your documents and intended account functions are supported.
