UConn guard Silas Demary Jr. was named the 2026–27 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year by the conference’s 11 head coaches. It is a preseason honor—not the award for the season’s eventual top player.
How Demary Jr. earned the preseason honor
The BIG EAST says its 11 head coaches selected Demary Jr. for the award, and coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players. The announcement also named UConn teammate Colben Landrew Preseason Freshman of the Year. BIG EAST announcement
His 2025–26 season at UConn
In the conference’s account of his 2025–26 season, Demary Jr. averaged 10.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game; the BIG EAST identifies the assists average as the league’s best. He appeared in 39 of UConn’s 40 games. The conference also says he made the All-BIG EAST first team and the All-Defensive team. BIG EAST announcement
UConn’s roster bio records 39 appearances and 38 starts, with averages of 6.0 assists per game overall and 7.4 in league games. Those are the university bio’s figures and scopes; they differ from the 5.9 assists per game reported in the BIG EAST award release. UConn roster bio

UConn’s place in the preseason picture
Separately from Demary Jr.’s individual honor, UConn was picked first in the BIG EAST’s 2026–27 preseason coaches’ poll, receiving eight first-place votes. A poll is a preseason ranking, not a result from the season. BIG EAST preseason honors and poll
UConn’s earlier preseason winners
UConn says Demary Jr. is its second BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year since the Huskies returned to the conference ahead of the 2020–21 season. Adama Sanogo received the preseason honor in 2022. These are preseason selections, distinct from an award recognizing a player’s performance after a season. UConn announcement
