StudyMate is a student project by Azmol Wasim Hussain that aims to turn scattered lecture notes, PDFs and other study materials into an interactive study partner. Hussain says he built it for a friend who struggled to manage study resources before exams. The project is described as combining document organization, questions grounded in uploaded materials, quizzes, study plans, revision and progress tracking—not as a product with independently verified learning or accuracy results.
What StudyMate is meant to do
Hussain frames StudyMate around a familiar study problem: having plenty of material but not knowing how to find, understand, practise and revise it effectively. The app is intended to bring those activities together around a student’s own materials.

- Organize study materials: upload and manage notes, PDFs and other resources.
- Ask questions: receive answers intended to draw on relevant material from those resources.
- Practise and revise: generate quizzes and revisit important concepts.
- Plan and track: create personalized study plans and monitor learning progress.
These are capabilities described by the builder, not the results of an independent feature audit. The project account does not report measured accuracy, learning gains, usage, or time saved.

The author describes a pipeline in which study material is processed and split into chunks, relevant context is retrieved for a question, and that context is passed to Gemma 2 2B to generate a response. In this setting, “grounded” means the answer is intended to use retrieved study material as context. Retrieval can make a response more relevant to a student’s notes, but it does not guarantee that the response is correct or complete.

The project is built with Next.js, React and TypeScript. Hussain says its components separate work such as AI, document processing, retrieval, database operations and study features.
Why the project uses Gemma 2 2B and Ollama
Hussain says StudyMate uses the open-weight Gemma 2 2B model run locally through Ollama. He presents this choice as a way to experiment with the AI layer, prompts and retrieval rather than shaping the whole application around one closed AI provider. As he puts it: “For StudyMate, open innovation wasn’t just about using an AI model — it allowed me to build the AI layer around the product rather than building the product around a single closed AI provider.”

- Daily Study Planner: Allows you to schedule your study plan before the test or examination everyday, total 63 days in one notebook. Table 2 shows the details of how to use it.
- Kokuyo Original Base Paper: Making sure you have a comfortable and satisfying writing experience, and it's acid-free and resistant to bleeding, which is suitable for long-term storage.
- Wireless Binding: Solidifies your back with glue instead of thread, so it can be opened flat and not easy to fall apart. This makes every page easy to write and read.
- Tearing Resistant: The spine cloth is made with a special film laminated to the surface of the paper so it is resistant to tearing and abrasion.
- Unique Design: The cover is made with a shiny varnish, and inner paper desined with item columns are filled in the same color of the cover. It's dark gray ruled lines that doesn't interfere with writing.
That is the builder’s architectural rationale, not proof that every version of the app runs entirely offline or keeps all user data on a user’s device. The project account does not establish where data is processed or stored in the live deployment, so the local-model description should not be treated as a privacy guarantee.

There is another DEV Community post with the same title by Jaswanth Kumar Kamireddi, but it describes a separate project with a different technology stack. This article concerns Azmol Wasim Hussain’s project, identifiable by its Gemma 2 2B and Ollama description.
