How the described workflow works
Mandilwar’s implementation
Mandilwar describes accepting PDF and text files, extracting their text and page metadata, and dividing the material into chunks. The application creates embeddings locally, stores them in ChromaDB, retrieves relevant passages in response to a question, and supplies those passages to a local Ollama model to generate an answer with source citations. The post names Qwen2.5 3B as the default model in that implementation.
The same description says the model can generate validated quizzes, summaries, and revision notes. The cited passages are intended to connect answers to the learner’s documents; readers should check whether the citations actually support an answer rather than assuming that generated output is correct.

Kumar’s description
Kumar describes a modular local application that can answer questions about study materials, explain difficult topics, generate quizzes and summaries, create flashcards, and offer hints. The account also describes retrieval-augmented generation and an open-weight model running on the user’s computer. It does not identify the same component list or default model as Mandilwar’s post, so those implementation details should not be attributed to Kumar’s build.
What the privacy and offline claims mean
Both authors present local processing as a way to keep study materials on the learner’s computer. Mandilwar says the interface binds to localhost, Streamlit usage statistics are disabled, there is no cloud fallback, and documents and the vector database are excluded from Git. These are the author’s descriptions of the design, not the results of an independent security audit; they do not by themselves establish that every possible data path or installation is secure.

Offline use is described as available after installation and download of the required model weights. Mandilwar also notes that model and embedding weights need to be downloaded before offline use. The articles describe intended behavior, not an independently tested guarantee across devices or configurations.
