Student Loan Refinancing: Credit Scores, Cosigners, and Rates Explained

Credit history and a cosigner can affect a private refinance offer, but compare APR, fees, term, and total repayment—and know what federal protections you would lose before refinancing federal loans.

Your credit history, cosigner, and choice of fixed or variable rate can affect a private student loan refinance offer—but the quoted rate is only one part of the decision. Compare the APR, fees, repayment term, monthly payment, and total repayment. Most importantly, identify any federal loans in the refinance: replacing them with private debt means giving up federal repayment and forgiveness protections.

How does your credit score affect refinancing?

Private refinance lenders use credit history and other underwriting factors to assess an application and set pricing. Stronger credit may help you qualify for a lower rate, but there is no universal minimum credit score established by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidance cited here. Approval criteria and offers vary by lender, so treat advertised rate floors as possibilities, not typical or guaranteed offers. Can a cosigner help—and what responsibility do they take on?

A cosigner with a stronger credit record may help you qualify or obtain a lower interest rate. But a cosigner is not just a reference: the CFPB says, “Co-signers are equally responsible and legally obligated to repay the loan.” Late or missed payments can affect both people’s credit records, and the cosigner may face collection efforts or legal action if the loan defaults. Can you remove a cosigner later?

Some private loans allow cosigner release, but eligibility and the process depend on the lender and loan contract. Ask the lender or servicer about required payment history, credit checks, application steps, and any other conditions before relying on release as a future option. There is no single release rule that applies to all private student loans. CFPB: If I co-signed for a private student loan, can I be released from the loan?

Are fixed or variable rates better?

A fixed rate stays the same over the loan’s life. A variable rate can change, which may cause the payment to change as well. Neither label alone tells you whether an offer is affordable: compare the APR and fees, the term, the scheduled payment, and total repayment. If considering a variable rate, make sure you can manage payments if the rate rises. CFPB: What are the interest rates on my student loans?

Will refinancing lower your payment or save money?

Not necessarily. A longer repayment term can lower the monthly payment while increasing the total interest paid. Compare each written offer with your current loan using both the monthly payment and the total amount you would repay, including fees and the effect of any longer term. A lower advertised rate or smaller monthly bill is not, by itself, proof that refinancing costs less overall. The CFPB explains the trade-off in its guidance on consolidating or refinancing student loans and consolidating private student loans.

What if some of your loans are federal?

Distinguish federal Direct Consolidation from private refinancing before comparing rates. A Direct Consolidation Loan combines eligible federal loans and remains a federal loan. Its interest rate is based on the weighted average of the included loans’ rates, rounded up to the nearest one-eighth of a percentage point; it is not the same as a private lender setting a new refinance rate. Check current federal options and eligibility through Federal Student Aid’s guide to consolidating federal student loans.

Private refinancing pays off the old loans with a new private loan. If that replaces federal loans, you lose federal repayment and forgiveness benefits and protections; the change cannot be undone simply by switching back to the original federal loans. Before signing, identify exactly which loans would be included and check whether you rely on federal options. In its Winter 2024 Supervisory Highlights: Special Edition Student Lending, Issue 36, the CFPB reported that examiners found lender marketing misrepresenting this consequence. The CFPB states: “When borrowers refinance or consolidate these loans through a private lender, they lose these benefits and protections.”

Will shopping for offers affect your credit score?

A loan application may trigger a hard inquiry. The CFPB’s general loan-shopping guidance recommends completing applications within a two-week period to reduce the impact of multiple inquiries. This is guidance, not a guaranteed scoring result or a rule specific to every refinance lender. Ask each lender whether an initial rate check is a soft inquiry and when it will make a hard inquiry. What should you compare in written refinance offers?

Use the same checklist for each offer so a lower payment or advertised rate does not obscure costs or lost protections.

  • APR and fees: Compare the personalized APR and any fees, not just an advertised minimum interest rate.
  • Rate type: Note whether the rate is fixed or variable and how a variable-rate change could affect your payment.
  • Term and repayment: Compare the repayment term, monthly payment, and total amount repaid.
  • Federal loans: Identify whether any federal debt is included and which repayment, forgiveness, or other protections you would give up.
  • Cosigner terms: Review the cosigner’s legal responsibility and whether the contract allows release, with its specific conditions.
  • Credit checks: Ask when soft and hard inquiries occur and plan applications with the CFPB’s two-week guidance in mind.
