You can claim a digital Xbox entitlement from some physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs—but this is not a way to copy a disc to a PC, and eligibility is not universal. Xbox’s announcement described an Insider test beginning August 31, 2026; as of October 4, 2026, general availability was not confirmed in the official guidance located for this article. Check current Xbox guidance and your console before relying on the feature.
What “digitizing” an Xbox disc means
In Xbox’s announced process, “digitize” means claiming a limited digital license for an eligible physical game through your Xbox account. It does not mean ripping or copying the game files to a PC. Xbox said the feature was starting with thousands of titles, but that launch-era description is not a current eligibility count, and not every title was available at launch. - Check the game and disc. The announced process applies to eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. Xbox says most discs in those generations are supported, but not all; eligibility may change.
- Use a supported console with a disc drive. The announced flow requires a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console. Insert the qualifying game disc and launch the game to claim its digital entitlement. Exact menu labels were not specified in the official announcement.
- Check your account’s game library. If the entitlement is available and successfully claimed, look for the game in your Xbox account or library experience, then install or play it using the options supported for that title.
- Keep the qualifying disc. The license is conditional on continuing to possess the disc. Microsoft’s usage rules say it may require revalidation and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess the qualifying disc. Microsoft Services Agreement
Xbox says Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming are available only “where supported.” A disc entitlement therefore does not guarantee that a game can be played on every device or streamed through Cloud Gaming.

Disc-to-digital entitlement versus an ordinary disc install

Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance explains that installing a supported disc game does not make it a disc-free digital copy.
Can you play Xbox disc games on Series S?
No. Xbox Series S is digital-only and has no physical game-disc drive, so it cannot read or use an Xbox game disc for either the announced claim process or ordinary disc-based play. A USB optical drive does not change that limitation. If you want to use physical discs, you need a supported console with a built-in disc drive, such as a disc-drive Xbox Series X; buying one is optional if you already have supported hardware.

Do you have to keep the disc after claiming a digital copy?
Yes. The announced entitlement is not an independent license that can be transferred away from the qualifying disc. Microsoft’s usage rules condition access on continuing to possess that disc and allow revalidation, suspension, or revocation if you no longer possess it.
What to check if the option does not appear
- Confirm the rollout for your account. The official announcement located here described an Insider test, not confirmed general availability as of October 4, 2026.
- Check the game generation and title eligibility. Only eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs are included in the announcement, and Xbox says not all titles qualify.
- Make sure you are using a disc-drive console. Series S cannot read the physical disc.
- Distinguish entitlement claiming from backward-compatible installation. A regular disc install may download the game, but it still requires the disc in the drive to play.
Xbox has not published, in the official pages cited here, a complete current eligibility list or a universal set of menu steps. If a specific title matters, consult current Xbox guidance rather than assuming every disc or account has access.
