Stuck on Getting Ready Screen After a Windows 11 Cumulative Update? What to Do

The “Getting Ready” message does not reveal whether Windows is still progressing or has failed to start. Use startup behavior to choose a recovery path, from WinRE repair to update removal or, only later, reset or reinstall.

If your Windows 11 PC stays on “Getting Ready” after a cumulative update, the message alone cannot tell you whether the update is still progressing or Windows has failed to start. Check whether the screen changes, Windows reaches sign-in, or the PC keeps restarting. If Windows does not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try a suitable, less disruptive recovery option before considering a reset or reinstall.

First, check what the PC is doing

There is no Microsoft-published wait-time cutoff for this exact screen. Its wording and how long it has appeared do not identify the cause, so avoid treating a particular number of minutes as proof that the update has failed.

  • The screen changes or Windows reaches sign-in: Let startup finish. If Windows starts but update problems continue, follow Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guidance. For Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help.
  • The PC repeatedly restarts or never reaches sign-in: Treat it as a startup problem and try recovery through WinRE.

Use WinRE if Windows will not start

WinRE provides recovery tools when Windows cannot start normally. Microsoft’s recovery guidance describes ways to reach it, including interrupting startup when Windows repeatedly fails to start. If the device is encrypted with BitLocker, a recovery key may be required to use some recovery options; have it available.

In WinRE, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options and choose the recovery tool that fits the problem. If the PC is managed by work or school and recovery steps do not resolve the issue, contact your IT department.

Choose a recovery option by how disruptive it is

Start with the least disruptive suitable option. Back up important files whenever you can before using recovery tools that could affect data or Windows settings.

Try Startup Repair for a startup problem

From WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, then follow the prompts. Microsoft describes Startup Repair as “a built-in Windows recovery tool that helps fix issues preventing the operating system from starting.” It is intended for certain startup problems, not a guaranteed fix for every update stall. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.

Uninstall the latest quality update if the problem began after it

If the startup problem began after a recent update, WinRE can offer an option to remove it: choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates, then select the latest quality update when that is the relevant update type. Microsoft Support says, “If the problem started after a recent Windows update, uninstalling it might fix the issue.” That is a possibility, not a guarantee; Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled.

Removing a security update can leave the PC without the protection it supplied. Consider that security trade-off before proceeding. Microsoft documents the available routes and limitations in How to uninstall a Windows Update.

Leave reset or reinstall until less disruptive options are unsuitable

Resetting or reinstalling Windows can have more serious consequences than Startup Repair or removing a recent update. Review Microsoft’s recovery options and back up important files where possible before proceeding. If you reinstall using Windows installation media created on another working PC, Microsoft warns that the process removes everything from the device.

A USB flash drive is only a way to create or use installation media if built-in recovery options fail; it is not a diagnostic tool or a guaranteed fix. You may already have a suitable drive. Microsoft’s recovery guidance explains the installation-media route and its consequences.

When Safe Mode is relevant

If you can reach Windows Startup Settings through WinRE, Safe Mode is one of the available startup troubleshooting options. It may help investigate problems when Windows can start in a limited mode, but it is not a substitute for the WinRE update-removal or Startup Repair steps when Windows cannot reach sign-in. Microsoft explains the options in Windows startup settings.
