strypt is a command-line tool and desktop app for removing metadata from supported files before you share them. Its documentation for version 0.2.0 lists formats ranging from JPEG and PDF to Office and audio files, but a clean report is not proof that every identifying trace is gone. Inspect the file itself, review strypt’s output, and share only the cleaned copy.
What hidden metadata can reveal
Files can contain information beyond what appears when you open them. A photo may include EXIF data; documents can contain hidden personal information. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office advises people to check documents before sharing and identifies image EXIF as one example of information to consider (ICO guidance). That does not mean every file contains sensitive data, but it is worth checking when a file could reveal more than its visible content.

What strypt does
strypt is distributed as a command-line tool and a desktop app. The project describes it as a self-contained binary and says its code paths make no network connections. Those are claims in the project’s documentation, not findings from an independent security audit; the project says it has not had an external audit. Its documentation describes internal checks and fuzzing, which should likewise be understood as project-reported practices, not independent certification (strypt-core 0.2.0 documentation).

A re-read can show whether recognized metadata remains; it cannot establish that every possible hidden or identifying trace is absent.

Which file formats does strypt support?
The project’s documented format set for the 0.2.0 release includes the following. This is the documented list, not a guarantee that every variant or feature within a format is handled identically.

The project says unsupported formats are reported rather than passed through. It also documents a specific embedded-image limit: photographs inside documents are handled by image handlers, but for PDF that applies to JPEGs only (format and handling documentation).

How to use strypt before sharing
Follow the current instructions in the project documentation for installation and the exact command or app controls for your system. At the time documented, the GUI requirements listed macOS 11 or later, Linux x86_64 or arm64 on Ubuntu 22.04 or Debian 12 and newer, and Windows x86_64. Availability and requirements can change, so check the project’s current installation guidance rather than assuming an older listing still applies (installation documentation).
- Keep the original separate. Run strypt on a copy if you may need the unmodified file later.
- Clean the file. Use the CLI or desktop app as described in the documentation for your platform. The project says the output retains the supplied name with a
.strippedsuffix. - Inspect the result. Review the cleaned copy with
strypt showand read any retained-metadata notes. A clean report concerns metadata the tool recognizes, not every possible way a file could identify you. - Check what the file visibly shows. Look for faces, screens, reflections, street signs, and text. Metadata removal does not blur, crop, or redact visible content.
- Share only the cleaned copy. Confirm the selected upload is the
.strippedfile, not the original.
What metadata removal cannot guarantee
The project explicitly warns that no tool can guarantee total metadata removal from complex formats. A clean re-read is useful evidence about what strypt’s handler detects, but it is not proof against every hidden trace or every way someone might identify the content (project limitations).

Cleaning also does not remove identifying information from a filename. Rename the output if the name itself reveals personal details. Nor does local metadata cleaning control what a service does after upload: the project cautions that a platform may store the submitted original even if it displays a re-encoded version. Choose the cleaned file deliberately and consider the service’s handling of uploads.
How to interpret the version history
The project documents defects in earlier releases: versions 0.1.1 and earlier could drop a page in a particular PDF page-tree case, and version 0.1.0 left EXIF data in photographs inside PDFs. These are disclosed prior-version issues, not evidence that version 0.2.0 has the same defects. The project’s release notes and version-specific documentation are the right place to verify which release you are using and what it reports (release history).

When another tool may fit better
strypt’s documentation names mat2 and ExifTool as alternatives for readers who need broader format coverage. The project says both cover more formats; that statement is not a current, independent feature-by-feature comparison. If comparing tools, check the formats you actually use, what happens when a file cannot be parsed, whether processing is local, what the tool shows before and after cleaning, and what limitations its documentation acknowledges (project’s alternatives and limitations).
