A graphical user interface (GUI) is a way to interact with a computer through visual elements and controls, such as windows, menus, icons, and buttons. Instead of relying only on typed commands, a person can select or manipulate items on screen. GUI stands for “graphical user interface.”
What does graphical user interface mean?
A GUI is one type of user interface: the part of a computer or software product through which a person interacts with it. IBM defines a GUI as a computer interface that uses a visual metaphor—often a desktop—and combines graphics with controls such as menus, windows, icons, and pointing devices. IBM Documentation’s IBM i glossary gives the formal definition.

In practice, the defining feature is visual interaction. A person sees controls or objects and acts on them, for example by selecting a menu item or opening a file. A GUI may also include text, messages, help, or places to enter commands; it does not have to be purely graphical.

A familiar desktop interface often uses the WIMP convention: windows, icons, menus, and pointing devices. The name describes a common family of interface elements, not a checklist every GUI must satisfy.

- Compact Mouse: With a comfortable and contoured shape, this Logitech ambidextrous wireless mouse feels great in either right or left hand and is far superior to a touchpad
- Durable and Reliable: This USB wireless mouse features a line-by-line scroll wheel, up to 1 year of battery life (2) thanks to a smart sleep mode function, and comes with the included AA battery
- Universal Compatibility: Your Logitech mouse works with your Windows PC, Mac, or laptop, so no matter what type of computer you own today or buy tomorrow your mouse will be compatible
- Plug and Play Simplicity: Just plug in the tiny nano USB receiver and start working in seconds with a strong, reliable connection to your wireless computer mouse up to 33 feet / 10 m (5)
- Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)
- Windows display content or applications in distinct screen areas.
- Icons visually represent files, applications, or actions.
- Menus present choices a user can select.
- Pointing devices, such as a mouse or trackpad, let users target and select items. Touchscreens can provide direct selection without a mouse.
Some interfaces have no icons, use touch rather than a pointer, or combine visual controls with typed text. A GUI does not require a desktop metaphor or overlapping windows.
GUI and user interface are not the same term
“User interface” (UI) is the broader category. IBM’s description includes the screen layout, text, commands, online help, and messages a person sees and uses in a software product. A GUI is a user interface whose interaction is organized around visual presentation and controls. IBM’s overview of user interfaces describes the broader term.

Graphical does not automatically mean easy to use. A confusing layout or poorly labeled control can make a GUI difficult, just as a command interface can be efficient for someone who knows its commands.
GUI compared with a command-line interface
A command-line interface (CLI) primarily accepts typed commands and returns text. A GUI presents visible controls that users can select. Neither approach is universally better: suitability depends on the task, the person using it, and how the interface is designed.

| Aspect | GUI | CLI |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction | Choose or manipulate visible controls and objects. | Type commands and read text output. |
| Discovering actions | Visible controls can make available options easier to spot, depending on the design. | Users generally need to know or look up the commands. |
| Precision and repeatability | Direct selection suits many visual tasks. | Commands can be precise and repeatable when correctly written. |
| Typical context | Useful for tasks centered on visual content or direct manipulation. | Useful for tasks where text commands fit the work or can be repeated. |
One computer can provide both. Historical graphical systems were often complemented by command-line terminals for work that was less suited to graphical interaction, as discussed in the Oxford Academic chapter on graphical user interfaces.

The GUI did not come from one inventor or a single release. Xerox PARC carried out influential research on graphical interaction, including work associated with the Alto. SRI International’s historical account describes an early PARC interface with icons, pop-up menus, overlapping windows, and point-and-click interaction.

- Computer mouse for easily navigating a computer interface; click, scroll, and more
- USB-A wired connection; if existing device only supports USB-C, an additional adapter will be required
- High-definition (1000 dpi) optical tracking ensures responsive cursor control for precise tracking and easy text selection
- 3 buttons offer effortless fingertip control
- Plug-and-go ready for instant use
Xerox developed the Alto prototype in 1973 and introduced the Star in 1981. Apple’s Macintosh, released in 1984, helped bring graphical interaction to a wider, lower-cost personal-computer market. These milestones mark different stages: research and prototype work, a commercial workstation, and broader consumer adoption. IEEE Spectrum reports that more than 1,200 Altos were built and tested, citing a 1989 Xerox PARC account; that is a historical count, not a current statistic.
