The company describes the fourth-generation system as combining 3D CT-based planning with robotic-arm assistance and AccuStop haptic guidance. The India launch names three applications: total knee, partial knee, and total hip, including advanced primary and revision procedures. The system assists surgeons; it does not perform an operation autonomously.
What is Mako 4 SmartRobotics?
Mako 4 is Stryker’s fourth-generation Mako robotic-arm-assisted surgical system. Stryker says it brings together patient-specific planning, robotic technology, and haptic guidance for joint-replacement procedures. Its product overview describes the approach as combining CT-based planning and haptic technology to support surgeon control and implant positioning. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of the system’s design and intended use, not a guarantee of accuracy or an individual patient’s result. Stryker’s Mako SmartRobotics overview

How do CT planning and haptic guidance work?
Planning based on a 3D CT scan
Stryker says the system uses 3D CT-based planning to help the surgeon plan a procedure around a patient’s anatomy. The company describes this planning as part of the process for deciding how to execute the operation; the surgeon remains responsible for clinical decisions.
Robotic-arm assistance and AccuStop
Stryker says AccuStop haptic technology provides real-time intraoperative guidance as the surgeon carries out the plan. The system is described as assisting the surgeon’s movements and supporting implant positioning, not operating independently. A patient should ask their treating orthopaedic surgeon how the system would be used in their particular procedure.

What does the evidence cited with the launch establish?
Stryker’s India announcement cites three publications related to robotic-assisted partial-knee surgery: a 2016 prospective randomized study of component-positioning accuracy in robotic-assisted unicompartmental knee arthroplasty; a 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis comparing robotic-arm-assisted with manual unicompartmental knee arthroplasty; and a 2021 comparison of iatrogenic soft-tissue trauma in robotic-assisted versus manual partial-knee arthroplasty. The announcement does not provide effect sizes or establish that these studies tested Mako 4 in India. This partial-knee evidence should not be read as proof of a particular outcome for Mako 4, or as evidence covering every hip and knee application.
