If the right controls are enabled, check whether the subscription itself is eligible, then verify the portal session and account scope. Stripe restricts updates for some subscription types and states, so changing settings alone may not restore every option.
Identify which subscription option is missing
“Subscription options” can mean several distinct actions. Ask what the customer is trying to do and note the affected subscription ID before changing settings.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Switch plans: lets a customer move to another configured price.
- Change quantity: lets a customer edit a subscription quantity, which is often used for seats.
- Cancel: a separate subscription-management action.
- Other portal actions: applying a promotion code, changing a payment method, or editing billing details each have their own settings.
Fix the missing action rather than enabling unrelated portal features.

Dashboard-managed configuration
In the Stripe Dashboard, open the customer portal settings and inspect subscription management. Stripe lists Switch plan and Update quantities as separate options, and both are off by default in its configuration guide: Stripe’s customer portal configuration guide.

- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
- For plan changes, enable plan switching and select the products and prices customers may choose.
- For seat or unit changes, enable quantity updates. Confirm the subscription’s price supports the quantity change you intend to offer.
- Check proration, downgrade timing, and promotion-code settings separately. Those settings do not enable plan switching or quantity editing by themselves.
Stripe’s guide says period-end managed downgrades are limited to prices for the same product. Enabling managed downgrades attaches a subscription schedule, so it does not make arbitrary cross-product downgrades available.
API-managed configuration
If your application creates or selects portal configurations through the API, inspect the configuration actually used for the affected portal session—not merely another configuration visible in the Dashboard. Confirm that subscription updates are enabled, that the allowed update types include the intended action (such as price or quantity), and that the permitted destination products and prices are present. Stripe’s API reference says an empty default_allowed_updates list means subscriptions are not updateable; its configuration schema also defines product and price choices: customer portal configuration API reference.

The cited create-configuration reference is tagged 2025-03-31.preview. Check the API version and SDK behavior used by your application before copying field names or request examples. Stripe’s versioning page identified 2026-08-26.dahlia as the current API version when checked on October 4, 2026; an account’s default version applies unless overridden: Stripe API upgrades and versioning.
Check whether the subscription can be updated in the portal
Stripe documents subscription structures and states for which the portal can allow cancellation but not updates. Review the affected subscription, rather than repeatedly toggling portal features: Stripe customer management documentation.

- PCI COMPLIANT
- Multiple products: a subscription containing multiple products is not portal-updateable.
- Usage-based billing: subscriptions using usage-based billing are not portal-updateable.
- Trial: trial subscriptions are restricted. If a trialing customer modifies a subscription, Stripe says the change normally ends the trial and creates an invoice for immediate payment. A
trial_update_behaviorsetting can be used to continue the trial; decide the intended billing behavior before enabling changes. - Invoice collection: subscriptions billed by invoice collection are not portal-updateable.
- Payment method: an unsupported payment method can prevent updates.
- Scheduled change: a subscription with an update already scheduled through a subscription schedule cannot be updated or canceled in the portal.
When one of these restrictions applies, use an appropriate custom customer workflow or manage the subscription through a supported Stripe API or Dashboard path. A portal flag cannot make an ineligible subscription updateable.
Verify the portal session and account scope
For Connect integrations
Check the connected-account context used to create the portal session. Stripe says the portal includes only subscriptions and invoices whose on_behalf_of value matches the session’s value. A mismatch can make the expected subscription absent or change what the customer sees: Stripe customer portal configuration for Connect.

Test with a fresh session
Create a new portal session for the affected customer when reproducing the issue. Stripe documents that a new session expires after five minutes; if accessed within that window, it expires within one hour of its most recent activity: customer portal sessions API reference.

Once the customer can make the change, the result depends on the configuration and subscription. Stripe says a price or quantity change can create proration adjustments. A price switch does not normally change the billing date or create an immediate charge, except when the billing interval changes or the subscription moves from free to paid: subscription update API reference.
Best Value
- Stylishly Compact
- Easy to Use
- Big Performance
Stripe’s current customer portal guide says customers can be offered up to 10 products for subscription switching. Treat that as Stripe’s documented product limit, not a recommendation to expose every available price. Offer only destinations that make sense for the customer’s subscription.
Quick Recap
Use this diagnostic checklist
- Record the exact missing action and the affected subscription ID.
- Inspect the active portal configuration. Enable the matching feature: plan switching or quantity updates.
- If configuration is API-managed, verify the session’s actual configuration, allowed update types, and destination product/price choices.
- Check the subscription for multiple products, usage-based billing, trial status, invoice collection, an unsupported payment method, or a pending subscription schedule.
- For Connect, compare the session’s
on_behalf_ofvalue with the subscription’s scope. - Create a fresh session and reproduce the issue with the affected customer.
- Before describing a successful change, review proration, trial behavior, downgrade timing, and any schedule it creates.
- If test and live behavior or deployments differ, compare the account API version, any SDK-pinned version, and the configuration used in each environment.
