Stripe Connect vs. Standard Stripe Payments: Which Should Your SaaS Use?

A SaaS selling only its own product will usually need standard Stripe Payments. A platform onboarding third-party sellers and routing their proceeds should evaluate Stripe Connect.

Use standard Stripe Payments if your SaaS charges customers for its own product or services and receives those payments itself. Consider Stripe Connect if your product serves as a platform for third-party sellers, providers, creators, or other payees and must onboard them, route money connected to their sales, collect a platform fee, or pay them out. The key question is who is selling to the buyer and who needs to receive the funds—not what you call your business.

Which Stripe product fits your business model?

Decision point Standard Stripe Payments is more likely to fit Stripe Connect is more likely to fit
Who sells to the buyer? Your SaaS sells its own software, product, or service. Third-party sellers, service providers, creators, or other businesses sell through your platform.
Who receives the sale proceeds? Your SaaS receives payment for its own sale. A connected account receives some or all of the money, possibly alongside a platform fee.
What does the funds flow require? You accept payment for your own sale and do not need to pay third-party sellers from the transaction. You need to create charges on connected accounts, collect payment on the platform and transfer funds, split proceeds, or make payouts.
Who needs to be onboarded as a payee? No third-party payees need to be set up to receive transaction proceeds. Your platform needs to onboard and manage businesses or people who will be paid.
What payment operations must the product support? Your company manages its own payment relationship. Your company needs connected-account management, payout operations, or related reporting and tax workflows.

These are practical product-selection prompts, not legal classifications. Whether your company is a marketplace, merchant of record, or responsible for specific obligations depends on its actual business model, contracts, geography, and payment configuration.

What does Connect add beyond accepting a payment?

Connect is designed for platforms and marketplaces that coordinate money movement among multiple parties. In addition to accepting a payment, the platform may need to establish connected accounts, direct funds to them, retain a fee, and manage payouts. Standard Payments is the relevant baseline when the SaaS is simply taking payment for its own goods or services and does not need connected payees or seller payouts.

Connect is not a single funds-flow setting. Stripe describes several patterns whose choice changes where a charge is created and how proceeds move. The right pattern should reflect the actual seller relationship and settlement arrangement, rather than being chosen only for implementation convenience.

Which Connect payment flow should a platform consider?

Flow Where the charge is created or collected What happens to the money
Direct charge The charge is created on a connected account. The seller collects payment through its connected account. The platform can also be involved in platform-fee arrangements, depending on configuration.
Destination charge The platform collects the charge. The platform transfers funds to the connected seller after collection.
Separate charges and transfers The charge and transfer are separate steps. The platform can route funds separately from a particular charge, including splitting proceeds among sellers.
Top-ups and payouts These are not necessarily tied directly to an incoming payment. The platform can add funds or make payouts outside a one-charge-to-one-transfer pattern.

The table describes the distinctions in Stripe’s public overview, not a complete integration specification. The account configuration and applicable integration documentation determine how a particular flow works and which party’s balance is involved.

How much onboarding control does your team need?

Connect offers three broad ways to onboard connected accounts. The choice affects how much of the experience Stripe provides versus how much the platform builds and maintains.

  • Embedded onboarding: Prebuilt onboarding is placed within the platform’s experience.
  • Custom-built onboarding: The platform controls more of the flow, but Stripe says this option requires significant engineering resources to integrate and maintain.

Onboarding is not only an initial signup screen. Identity verification and other requirements can need attention over time, so plan for ongoing account status and requirement handling when estimating the engineering and operations work.

How should you compare Connect pricing with Payments?

Connect’s costs depend on its configuration and geography. Stripe describes two broad pricing approaches; they have different implications for who pays processing costs and how a platform should model its economics.

Pricing approach Who handles processing fees? Fees Stripe describes
Connected accounts pay their processing fees directly Connected accounts pay their own processing fees. Stripe says platforms using this option do not incur additional account, payout-volume, tax-reporting, or per-payout fees.
Platform handles pricing for users The platform is responsible for Stripe processing fees and handles pricing for its users. Stripe’s localized pricing pages show monthly active-account and per-payout fees for this approach. The currency and amounts differ by country.

Do not treat one country’s Connect prices as universal or assume that a published price applies to every negotiated arrangement. Check the current pricing for the countries where you operate and include your actual fee allocation, active connected accounts, and payout pattern in the unit-economics model.

Connect also has platform-revenue features, including the ability to mark up payment transactions or other services. Stripe’s features page describes revenue-share partner eligibility as requiring Connect with Standard accounts, Stripe Checkout or Stripe Elements, and a payments-volume run rate of $1 million USD. That is an eligibility description, not confirmation that a particular platform has been accepted into the program.

What compliance and operational responsibilities remain?

Stripe describes Connect tools for identity verification, KYC-related checks, sanctions screening, onboarding, and payout operations. Its marketplace materials also describe tax-reporting features, including workflows for US 1099 forms. These capabilities can support platform operations, but they do not by themselves establish that Stripe assumes every legal, tax, or consumer-facing obligation of the platform.

Stripe Support describes a direct contractual relationship between Stripe and connected accounts and says that, unless the platform elects otherwise, the platform is not responsible for Standard connected-account activity in the context covered by that support material. That statement is specific to the described contractual and account context; it should not be generalized to every Connect configuration. Confirm the current governing agreements, account type, country, and your own duties for the business arrangement you are implementing.

What should you decide before implementation?

  1. Map the sale: Identify whether your company or a third party is selling to the buyer, who is the payee, and whether your company retains a fee.
  2. Document the funds flow: Decide whether the seller should collect through a direct charge, the platform should collect and transfer through a destination charge, or charge and transfer steps need to be separate.
  3. Plan connected-account onboarding: Choose hosted, embedded, or custom onboarding and account for ongoing verification requirements, not just initial integration.
  4. Model local costs: Establish who pays processing fees, then verify the current pricing and relevant terms in each operating country.
  5. Check responsibilities: Review the Stripe terms and account configuration that apply, alongside the platform’s legal, tax, and operational duties.
