For every other failure, it rethrows the original error. That narrow rule matters because the fallback removes the fields that control tax handling; checkout may recover, but the sale can then complete without the expected VAT collection.
When should a checkout retry?
In Daniel Pertu’s example, the second call to stripe.checkout.sessions.create is not a general retry for transient errors. It is a targeted fallback for a particular validation rejection. The example concerns a one-time £20 licence checkout: EU customers are routed through Stripe as merchant of record, while the UK and other regions are deliberately outside that route. The managed-payments option adds managed_payments.enabled, a tax code, and tax behavior to the Checkout Session inputs. Pertu says these fields can be rejected if merchant-of-record activation, terms acceptance, or an eligible tax code is missing. [c001]

The wrapper therefore needs evidence both that those optional fields were present and that they caused the failure. If either condition is missing, the implementation preserves the original error instead of retrying with a different request.
Two gates decide whether to use the fallback
1. Confirm the optional feature was applied
The caller tells the wrapper whether the managed-payments fields were actually added. If the request did not include them, removing them cannot address the error, so the original failure is rethrown.

- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
2. Match a managed-payments validation rejection
The predicate accepts a structured error parameter beginning with managed_payments. It also accepts a matching message, but only after confirming the error is a StripeInvalidRequestError. Known non-validation error types are rejected. This avoids treating a card decline, connection problem, or unrelated API failure as evidence that the optional fields caused the failure.
The point is not to make the predicate broad enough to catch every error that might be recoverable. It is to make the fallback depend on a positive signal tied to the feature being removed. As Pertu puts it: “An optional optimisation that can hard-fail should have a path back to the unoptimised version, and that path needs to be narrower than you first want to make it.” [c001]

Remove only the fields this feature added
After a qualifying rejection, the helper removes three fields at their known paths before making its one fallback call:

- Session-level
managed_payments. - Line-item
price_data.tax_behavior. - Line-item
price_data.product_data.tax_code.
It does not recursively delete every property with those names wherever it appears. A broad recursive removal could change unrelated data if another feature uses a similarly named field. Keeping the removal list specific makes the fallback’s behavior easier to reason about: it strips the inputs introduced for this feature, not any matching-looking data elsewhere in the request. Keep buyer-facing errors useful and diagnostics available
Pertu’s example maps failures according to whether the buyer can act on them. This is the article’s chosen response taxonomy, not a universal Stripe requirement:
- A card decline becomes a buyer-actionable 402 response, using Stripe’s message when available.
- A Stripe rate limit becomes 429, with a suggestion to try again shortly.
- Connection or API-availability errors become 503.
- Invalid-request, authentication, and unknown errors remain generic 500 responses, with details retained for server-side diagnosis.
This separation avoids exposing every internal failure as though the buyer could fix it, while preserving information needed to investigate the server-side cause. [c001]

A successful fallback can still create a tax problem
Removing the managed-payments fields can restore checkout availability, but it also means a completed sale may lack the VAT collection the configured route was intended to handle. The fallback does not repair merchant-of-record activation, terms acceptance, or tax-code configuration, and it does not settle any resulting tax liability.
Pertu describes two monitoring signals for that degraded success: log it and send it to Sentry at error level; then use a webhook-side check to flag completed sales where the billing country is in the EU allowlist and tax is zero. That check is a review signal, not proof of an error: a legitimate EU business purchase using reverse charge may also have zero tax. [c002]

Fallback retries and idempotent replays solve different problems
A validation fallback changes the request by removing optional fields. An idempotent replay repeats the same operation with the same request and a stable key. They address different failure modes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Case | Trigger | Request changes? | Risk or follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Targeted validation fallback | Optional fields were applied and the error identifies their rejection. | Yes. The known managed-payments fields are removed. | The sale may complete without expected VAT; log and review the outcome. |
| Replay after an ambiguous connection failure | The caller cannot tell whether the original operation executed. | No. Replay the same operation with the same idempotency key. | The key helps avoid performing the same operation twice; reconcile the result if needed. |
Stripe’s API documentation says idempotency keys let a caller safely retry an operation without accidentally performing it twice: Stripe saves the first result for a key and returns that result for subsequent requests using it. Stripe also says keys may be pruned after they are at least 24 hours old. That mechanism concerns replaying the same operation; it does not make the modified fallback request identical to the original one. Pertu’s sample wrapper does not show an idempotency key.
