Is Jetstar really cheaper after baggage?
Sometimes. The answer depends on what you need to bring, whether you want a chosen seat or food, how much flexibility matters, and what comparable flights cost on the same dates. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has described Jetstar’s announced baggage change as further unbundling: a base fare can leave passengers paying more for the trip they actually want. ABC News quotes aviation consultant Justin Wastnage observing that a full-service airline can sometimes be cheaper for travellers with baggage, guaranteed seats and onward connections. That is a general observation, not a route-specific comparison.

Build the comparison from complete itineraries, including any separately purchased extras and the practical value of departure times, airports and connections. A low fare may suit a traveller with a small bag and a direct route; a traveller carrying a wheelie case or relying on a tight onward connection may value a different option. Do not assume either outcome without checking current prices and terms.

- Baggage fit: Check both weight and dimensions for your travel date, and whether you need checked baggage or overhead space.
- Flexibility: Compare change deadlines, fare differences and cancellation conditions.
- Itinerary: Consider flight times, airports, connections and alternatives if disruption affects your plans.
- Cabin: Consider the aircraft, flight duration and any entertainment or power you need.
ABC News also quotes Choice spokesman Andy Kelly criticizing the experience of paying separately for airline extras. That is Choice’s view of the unbundling change, not a measured statistic about all Jetstar customers.

What baggage is included on Jetstar?
There is no single allowance that applies to every Jetstar booking. Jetstar’s published Packed bundle guide covers selected Jetstar Airways (JQ) bookings made directly with the airline, and says inclusions may vary with flight duration, aircraft, origin and destination. Third-party bookings and other routes may have different terms, so check the allowance attached to your own booking.
For the selected Packed bundle, the guide states a 7 kg carry-on allowance for flights before 2 February 2027, 20 kg checked baggage, standard seat selection and an in-flight voucher. On some flights under one hour, a snack may replace the voucher. The guide says the bundle was called More before 22 September 2026 and that only its name changed.
To verify what you have purchased, use Jetstar’s Packed bundle product guide and check your itinerary in Manage Booking. Do not assume that the selected bundle’s benefits apply to a different fare or booking channel.

What changes on 2 February 2027?
According to Jetstar’s guide and the ACCC’s September 2026 report, the planned basic-fare allowance from 2 February 2027 is one small underseat bag measuring no more than 40 x 30 x 20 cm. A second item or a larger bag requiring overhead-bin space requires paid Priority Carry-on. The ACCC report gives an announced one-way price range of $25–$52 depending on the flight, including priority boarding. That is a stated future range in the report, not a universal current fee.
Jetstar says the change is intended to improve boarding and on-time departures by reducing gate bag weighing and competition for overhead-bin space. The ACCC frames it as further unbundling. ABC News notes that the effect on an individual traveller depends on what they carry: a small-backpack traveller might pay less, while someone who needs a wheelie case could pay more after the add-on. These are stated rationales and assessments, not established outcomes after implementation.
If you are travelling on or after that date, check the allowance and fee displayed for your own flight before booking and again in your itinerary. If you are considering a bag for underseat use, verify its external dimensions—including handles and pockets—and compare them with the allowance shown in your booking. You may not need to buy a new bag if one you already own fits.

What does the Packed bundle offer for changes and seats?
For the selected bundle described in Jetstar’s guide, standard seat selection is included. Date or time changes are allowed before the applicable deadline, but a fare difference may be payable. The guide does not include free same-day changes, ordinary cancellation refunds or changes to the origin or destination. Passenger-name changes are allowed subject to fare difference and process requirements.

Check the fare attached to your booking in Manage Booking, particularly if you booked through a third party. If a bundle’s flexibility matters, compare the exact deadline and any fare difference exposure with the alternative fare before deciding it is worthwhile.
Does the onboard experience vary by flight?
Yes. A short-haul A320-family flight and a long-haul 787 are not the same cabin product. Airline Ratings describes the short-haul cabin as stripped back and reports seatback entertainment and in-seat power on 787s. Aircraft and amenities can differ by specific service, so verify the aircraft and facilities for your flight rather than assuming they are guaranteed.

Seat choice may also matter more on a longer flight or for travellers with specific seating needs. Include any paid seat selection you actually want when comparing fares; the selected Packed bundle described above includes standard seat selection, but other bookings may not.

Available figures need careful dating and context. A Jetstar release published in December 2025 cited Federal Government figures for February 2025: 76.1% of Jetstar domestic flights arrived on time and 2.6% were cancelled. The release said the figures covered more than 6,600 flights to more than 20 domestic destinations. These are historical figures published by the airline, not a current performance ranking. The ACCC’s September 2026 report says its service analysis uses BITRE data through July 2026; it is the more recent source for a broader view of performance data.
Airline Ratings’ live ratings page, accessed 7 October 2026, listed 2.7/7 for value from 206 reviews, 2.6/7 for seat and cabin space from 202, 2.7/7 for customer service from 209, and a 32.2% recommendation rate from 211. The counts differ by category, and the ratings reflect reviews submitted to that site—not a representative survey of all Jetstar passengers. Treat them as one limited source of customer sentiment, not a prediction of your own trip.

What should you do if a flight is delayed or cancelled?
Jetstar directs affected passengers to Manage Booking to review available options. Its contact page also describes a process for claims for additional expenses. What you can receive depends on the route, circumstances, applicable law, fare rules and current airline terms; do not assume that every disruption guarantees a particular rebooking, compensation or reimbursement outcome.
For trip planning, keep relevant booking details and receipts for eligible expenses, and check the applicable rules and any insurance policy wording before relying on reimbursement. Start with Jetstar’s contact page for its current disruption and expense-claim information.
How to decide whether Jetstar fits your trip
- Price the trip you will actually take. Compare the fare plus the baggage, seat, food and flexibility options you need against complete alternatives for the same route and dates.
- Check your bag against the correct date’s rules. Confirm the allowance in the booking, especially for travel from 2 February 2027 onward.
- Read the exact fare conditions. Note change deadlines, possible fare differences and cancellation terms rather than relying on a bundle name alone.
- Assess the itinerary and aircraft. Decide whether flight times, connections, disruption alternatives, cabin needs or particular amenities justify paying more elsewhere.
- Separate evidence from expectation. Treat published fare terms as terms for the stated booking, historical punctuality numbers as historical, and online review averages as self-selected feedback.
