For preventing sports injuries, evidence supports progressive strength-training programmes—but it does not show that strength training universally beats rest for every overuse injury. The practical approach is to build strength gradually and make recovery part of training, not treat them as competing choices.
What the evidence says about strength training
The most directly relevant synthesis is a 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis by Lauersen, Andersen and Andersen. It examined six randomised trials published from 2003 to 2016, involving 7,738 participants aged 12–40 and 177 acute or overuse injuries. Across the studies, strength-training programmes were associated with lower sports-injury risk: RR 0.338 (95% CI 0.238–0.480). The authors rated the evidence high certainty and found a dose-response association between training volume and prevention. This pooled result covers sports injuries overall; it is not an overuse-only estimate or a prediction of an individual’s risk. Read the 2018 review.

The trials varied in participants, programme design, outcomes and follow-up. The finding that training volume was associated with prevention does not mean that more training is always better: the review recommends familiarisation, attention to technique and gradual increases in volume and intensity.

A separate 2014 review helps illustrate why injury categories matter. Across physical-activity programmes overall, its estimate for overuse injuries was RR 0.527 (95% CI 0.373–0.746). In a separate analysis, strength training had an RR of 0.315 (95% CI 0.207–0.480) for sports injuries. The strength-training figure is not an overuse-only result, so the two estimates should not be treated as interchangeable. Read the 2014 review.

Other findings offer context, but do not settle the question for every sport or overuse condition:
- A 2021 review of exercise-based prevention programmes in football pooled 10 trials and 13,355 athletes. For non-contact musculoskeletal injuries, it reported IRR 0.77 (95% CI 0.61–0.97) versus control; the authors rated the evidence very low quality. The analysis was football-specific and did not isolate strength training or all overuse injuries. Read the football review.
- A 2025 meta-analysis of strength-training prevention programmes in contact sports reported RR 0.70 (95% CI 0.60–0.82) for total injuries. Its endpoint was total injuries, not overuse injuries alone, and results differed by body location and programme component. Read the contact-sports review.
Why rest belongs in a prevention plan
Rest and strength training address different parts of training-load management. A prevention programme develops capacity over time; recovery gives the body time to respond to training. The International Olympic Committee’s consensus statement on load and injury risk recommends adequate recovery, particularly after intensive training, competition and travel, and monitoring pain and functional limitations. It does not establish one load ratio or weekly percentage as a universal safety rule. Read the IOC consensus statement.

How to apply this without overdoing it
- Start with a manageable programme. The evidence concerns structured programmes, not a single lift or piece of equipment as a stand-alone safeguard.
- Familiarise yourself with the movements. Learn and practise technique before substantially increasing difficulty or volume.
- Progress gradually. Increase training volume and intensity over time rather than making abrupt workload jumps.
- Plan recovery. Allow adequate recovery, especially around intensive sessions, competition and travel.
- Pay attention to symptoms and function. Monitor pain and functional limitations. The prevention trials do not prescribe how long someone with an existing injury should rest or provide an individual rehabilitation plan.
The 2018 review reported that nearly 4,000 participants completed interventions lasting several months without an adverse event attributed to strength training. That is reassuring about the interventions studied, but it does not establish that strength training is risk-free. Resistance bands may be one way to perform resistance exercises, but the cited studies evaluated training programmes—not bands as a product or a standalone injury-prevention treatment.
