If your StreamYard broadcast to YouTube stays on “preparing,” first confirm that StreamYard is connected to the intended YouTube channel and has the necessary permissions. Then check live-stream eligibility and work through browser, device, and network troubleshooting. StreamYard’s reviewed help pages do not explain that exact status or confirm a single fix, so treat these steps as checks for related connection and start errors—not a guaranteed solution.
First, identify where “preparing” appears
Before changing settings, note whether the status appears in StreamYard or YouTube, whether you created the broadcast in StreamYard or scheduled it on YouTube, which channel is selected, and whether the same thing happens on another attempt. This information can help you describe the problem accurately if you need support; it does not diagnose the cause.
StreamYard’s help page for general YouTube connection and start errors does not define a broadcast stuck on “preparing.” The available guidance therefore supports the checks below for related errors, but does not establish that any one of them fixes this exact status. StreamYard: I’m getting an error message when connecting to YouTube
Check the connected YouTube channel and permissions
- In StreamYard, verify that the selected destination is the channel you intend to use. Check which Google account is signed in as well: one account can have access to more than one channel.
- Confirm that the connected Google user owns the channel or is a manager or owner of its Brand Account. StreamYard says YouTube Studio/Channel Permissions currently support live streaming only for the channel owner.
- Check that the Google authorization granted to StreamYard includes “Manage your YouTube account.” If you are unsure, review the connected account and its permissions, then reconnect the correct channel as needed.
These account and connection checks are especially relevant if you recently changed accounts, channel access, or destination settings. StreamYard’s channel-connection guide covers the required roles and permissions: Connect a YouTube Channel.

Confirm YouTube live-stream eligibility
If live streaming was only just enabled for the YouTube channel, StreamYard says activation can take up to 24 hours. If it is already enabled, verify that StreamYard is connected to that same channel. If YouTube shows a restriction message, check the channel’s YouTube dashboard; StreamYard notes that a restriction message can be associated with a Community Guidelines violation. Work through browser, device, and network checks
StreamYard recommends these general checks for a YouTube connection or start error. They are not documented as a specific cure for the “preparing” status. Try one change at a time and retry, so you can tell whether anything makes a difference.

- Close and relaunch the browser. If the problem continues, restart the computer.
- Check the network connection and speed. If you suspect the connection, test on another available network before considering any change to your internet service.
- Open StreamYard in a private or incognito window. If it works there, browser data or an extension may be involved.
- Clear the browser’s cache and cookies, then sign in again.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions that could affect pages or connections, then retry.
- Check whether a firewall, proxy, or VPN is interfering with the connection. If you manage the network, review its settings; on a managed work or school network, ask its administrator for help.
These are StreamYard’s general troubleshooting suggestions for related YouTube errors. Their help page does not identify which, if any, applies to a broadcast stuck at “preparing.” See the related error guidance.
Test without making a public broadcast
A test can help you check the workflow without sending an unwanted public stream. It may narrow down where the problem occurs, but it does not prove what caused the stuck status.

- Unlisted YouTube test: Choose unlisted if you need to share the test link with a specific person.
- Recording without a destination: Make a local StreamYard recording without streaming to YouTube to check the session separately from the destination connection.
StreamYard describes these testing options here: How to Test a Live Stream.
If the broadcast was created on YouTube, consider the documented RTMP route
For an existing broadcast created on YouTube, StreamYard documents connecting it through a custom RTMP destination using YouTube’s RTMP URL and stream key. This is a separate setup option, not a verified workaround for a stream stuck on “preparing.” StreamYard says the custom RTMP option requires a paid plan; YouTube comments do not appear in the StreamYard studio, and you must enter the studio and click “Go Live” manually. If the checks do not resolve the issue, use the “Submit a request” route linked from StreamYard’s help page. Include the exact status or error text, whether it appears in StreamYard or YouTube, the selected channel, whether the broadcast was created in StreamYard or on YouTube, the checks you already tried, and the approximate time it happened. That context can help support distinguish an account, setup, or connection problem. StreamYard connection-error help
