There is no single best live-stream setting. Choose a bitrate that matches your platform, codec, resolution, and frame rate—and that your connection can sustain steadily. Set latency according to how quickly you need viewers to see the stream, then test with representative motion and audio before going live.
Choose a bitrate that fits your stream and your connection
Bitrate is the amount of video data sent each second. A higher bitrate can preserve more detail, but only if the destination accepts it and your upload connection can sustain it. The right target depends on the platform, codec, resolution, and frame rate—not resolution alone.

YouTube’s official live-encoder guidance recommends the following video bitrates. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection can deliver them reliably.
| Video format | H.264 | AV1 or H.265 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
Use the row for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually intend to send. YouTube’s published table distinguishes codecs and frame rates; do not assume that a figure for one combination applies to another. YouTube also recommends checking your upload speed.
#1 Best Overall

Make sure upload capacity has room to spare
A speed-test result is not the same as a reliably sustainable stream bitrate. OBS Project’s official Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests starting at about 75% of total upload speed when troubleshooting. Treat that as a heuristic, not a universal target: the platform’s bitrate limits and the stability of the connection matter too. If your connection cannot hold the platform’s recommended bitrate, use a lower sustainable setting rather than accepting repeated drops.
Set the encoder for YouTube
YouTube’s published requirements support RTMP or RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second. Its guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data to and through Google’s servers.

- Bitrate mode: Use CBR for YouTube as specified in its encoder requirements.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where your encoder exposes this setting; do not exceed four seconds.
- Codec and profile: Match the platform’s current requirements and use the bitrate recommendation for that codec and video format.
- Frame rate: YouTube allows up to 60 fps. Choose a frame rate your content and connection can sustain, then select the corresponding bitrate guidance.
- Transport: Use RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
These are YouTube-specific settings. For another platform, check its current ingest guidance and dashboard rather than copying YouTube’s bitrate figures.
Balance latency against quality and resolution
Latency is the delay between the event and viewers seeing it. A lower-latency setting can make interaction feel more immediate, while the available choices and supported formats depend on the destination. YouTube’s documentation says its low-latency option is unavailable at 4K/2160p; 4K streams are delivered at normal latency.

Decide which matters more for the event: faster audience interaction or a higher-resolution stream. If 4K is required on YouTube, plan for normal latency. For other formats, consult YouTube’s current latency options and verify the choice in your stream setup; do not assume a low-latency mode supports every resolution.
Test before the event and monitor the live stream
YouTube recommends a pre-stream test using movement and audio similar to what the actual event will contain. A static test image does not exercise the stream in the same way as moving footage. Check the stream’s health during the test and during the event, and review the messages shown by YouTube.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
- Choose the intended format. Set the planned resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval.
- Test the full path. Send a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the intended ingest setup and the same kind of motion and audio as the event.
- Check stream health. Watch for dropped frames or platform warnings instead of judging quality from the preview alone.
- Adjust and repeat. If the connection drops frames, reduce the bitrate to a sustainable value, or investigate the connection and ingest route before raising it again.
- Keep monitoring. Review stream health and platform messages while live; a successful pre-stream test cannot guarantee that network conditions will remain unchanged.
Diagnose dropped frames and unstable delivery
OBS Project describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. That points first to the delivery path and connection capacity, not automatically to a need for a higher video bitrate.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Try another ingest server. A different server may provide a more reliable route. OBS notes that Twitch users on Windows can use TwitchTest to identify servers with better quality scores.
- Lower the bitrate. Reduce it to a level your connection can sustain while respecting the destination’s limits. OBS’s 75%-of-total-upload suggestion is a troubleshooting starting point, not a platform recommendation.
- Check whether the issue is service-specific. If practical, test another service. A problem limited to one destination may help narrow the cause.
- Use Ethernet to test Wi-Fi instability. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming. If the stream improves on Ethernet, the wireless link may be contributing to the problem.
- Check software that can interfere with connections. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, and bundled network software as possible sources of interference.
- On Windows, consider network troubleshooting options. OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as possibilities; some users report improvement, but these are not guaranteed fixes.
- Check network hardware and the ISP path. If the problem persists, investigate the modem, router, and other network equipment, and contact your ISP. Congestion or changes on the ISP side may be outside your control.
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may reduce dropped frames. It does not fix the underlying connection problem, and the lower bitrate also reduces image quality. Treat it as a fallback, not a substitute for diagnosing the network.
