Streamlabs Desktop is a free-to-start Windows and macOS app for streaming and recording. It brings scenes, capture sources, overlays, alerts, widgets, and chat tools into one interface built on the OBS engine. You can start with a free plan; Streamlabs Ultra is optional and is most relevant if you need features such as multistreaming or expanded overlay access. Whether it is the right choice depends on your setup preferences and hardware—not on a proven performance advantage over OBS Studio.
What Streamlabs Desktop does
Streamlabs Desktop lets you assemble scenes from sources such as game or screen capture, a webcam, microphone, images, and overlays, then broadcast or record from the app. Scenes define what viewers see and hear; sources are the individual inputs and visual elements within a scene.

Streamlabs says Desktop is built on the OBS engine. That does not make it identical to OBS Studio: Streamlabs adds its own interface and integrations for creator tools such as alerts, widgets, and chat features. Streamlabs describes the product and its OBS relationship in its Desktop overview and FAQ.

Ultra is a paid option for people who need features such as multistreaming to several destinations, broader overlay and widget access, the full app library, a customizable tip page, and increased limits for selected tools. The Ultra page displayed a starting price of $15.75 per month on October 3, 2026. That is a dated page snapshot, not a guaranteed current price; check the page for the price, billing cadence, availability, and cancellation terms applicable to you.
How to set up Streamlabs Desktop
- Download and open the app. Use the installer for your computer’s operating system. Grant camera and microphone permissions only if you plan to use those devices.
- Choose a workflow and sign in. During onboarding, choose livestreaming or recording, select a skill level, and sign in with a Streamlabs ID or supported streaming account.
- Import or start fresh. If you are moving from OBS Studio, choose the import option for existing scenes and profiles; otherwise, begin with a new setup. Streamlabs Support’s July 2026 getting-started guide says the documented import can be done in one click. That describes the import path, not guaranteed compatibility for every plugin or configuration.
- Choose a theme and plan. Select a theme or skip it, then choose Starter/free or Ultra. The free plan is enough to try the core app.
- Connect your platform and build a scene. In the app’s settings, connect the streaming platform you intend to use. Create a scene, then add the sources you need, such as a game or display capture, microphone, camera, and overlays. A screen-only stream can omit the camera and microphone.
- Check output and audio before going public. Set output options for your platform and connection, then use a private or test stream if the platform offers one. Confirm the selected scene, audio levels, and destination before starting a public broadcast.
For device inputs, Streamlabs documents adding a webcam as a Video Capture Device source and choosing a microphone in audio settings. A USB microphone or webcam is optional: select hardware based on connection compatibility, monitoring needs, room noise, and budget rather than treating either as a requirement. A capture card may be needed for a console-to-PC workflow, but it is not required for ordinary desktop capture; check your console, resolution, refresh rate, and passthrough needs before buying one.
Computer and internet requirements
Streamlabs’ system requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12+ and 8 GB of RAM as minimum guidance. For more demanding game or art streams, animated overlays, or advanced plugins, it recommends a stronger CPU and GPU, at least 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and Ethernet. The same page says 3.6 Mbps or better upload is suitable for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. These are Streamlabs’ vendor-published guidelines, not independent benchmarks; actual needs depend on the platform, output settings, content, and other software running on your computer. See the requirements page.

Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start guide gives a different operating-system recommendation in its recommended-configuration column: Windows 11 or macOS 13+. Because the two official pages differ, verify current compatibility for your OS before downloading. The quick-start guide also covers onboarding and setup: Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide.
Streamlabs Desktop vs. OBS Studio
Both apps use scenes and sources to compose a broadcast. OBS Studio’s official site describes combining sources such as window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. Streamlabs says Desktop uses the OBS engine and adds its own interface and creator-tool integrations. See the OBS Studio website.
| Decision point | Streamlabs Desktop | OBS Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow | Scene-and-source workflow with Streamlabs creator tools integrated into its interface. | Scene-and-source workflow described on the OBS official site. |
| Overlays, alerts, and widgets | Streamlabs lists these among its tools; access varies by plan. | Not established by the OBS homepage cited here; check OBS documentation and the tools you intend to use. |
| Importing OBS setups | Streamlabs documents importing scenes and profiles; individual plugin compatibility is not guaranteed. | The source reviewed does not establish a corresponding import path from Streamlabs. |
| Performance on your computer | No controlled comparison establishing an advantage. | No controlled comparison establishing an advantage. |
Choose Streamlabs if its integrated tools and onboarding suit the way you want to work, and assess whether any Ultra features justify a subscription for your use. Choose OBS Studio if its workflow better fits your preferences, sources, and plugins. Try the actual scene you plan to use on your own computer before committing to a production setup: the available official sources do not establish that one app is universally faster, more stable, or better quality.

Streamlabs Console is a separate Xbox-oriented workflow, not a like-for-like desktop app for every creator. Common setup problems to check
- Camera or microphone missing: confirm the app has the relevant operating-system permission and that the intended device is selected as a source or audio input.
- Wrong scene on air: check the active scene and its sources before starting the broadcast; a scene can be valid but contain the wrong capture input.
- No or uneven audio: verify the selected microphone, its input level, and whether the correct audio source is included in the scene.
- Imported setup behaves differently: inspect imported scenes and profiles individually. The documented import option does not establish universal compatibility for plugins.
- Stream struggles at the intended settings: compare your output choice with your upload capacity and the platform’s requirements. Streamlabs’ 3.6 Mbps guidance applies to 720p at 30 fps for most platforms, not every resolution or frame rate.
Copyright and channel policy matter
Having streaming software does not grant rights to music, video, game footage, or other material you broadcast. Confirm that you have permission to use each element and review the destination platform’s current copyright rules. For YouTube, also consider channel monetization and reused-content policies: a technically continuous stream is not, by itself, evidence that a channel meets those rules.
