Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Streamlabs Desktop is using too much CPU during a looping YouTube stream, first check whether it is encoding with x264. Try a faster x264 preset or a compatible hardware encoder, then lower the output resolution to 1280×720 if you are currently streaming at 1080p. If CPU use remains high, simplify the active scene and distinguish encoder overload from GPU or network trouble before considering new hardware.
First identify what is overloaded
High CPU use alone does not reveal the cause of a stream problem. In Streamlabs, note the current encoder, output resolution and frame rate, CPU and GPU use, and any skipped, lagged, or dropped-frame warnings. Streamlabs distinguishes these symptoms:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Skipped frames: the encoder is overloaded, often alongside high CPU use.
- Lagged frames: the compositor is overloaded, commonly associated with high GPU use.
- Dropped frames: a network problem is more likely.
These categories are useful for choosing what to test, but they do not prove the cause on a particular computer. See Streamlabs Support’s frame and stream-quality troubleshooting guide, last updated April 25, 2025.

Check whether you are using x264
x264 is a software encoder that uses the CPU. A compatible hardware encoder such as NVIDIA NVENC uses a dedicated encoder in the GPU and may reduce the CPU load from encoding. As Streamlabs Support explains in Getting Started with Streamlabs Desktop, “The software encoder (x264) will use your CPU to encode video, while hardware encoders like NVENC utilize a dedicated encoder in the GPU, allowing you to play and stream without compromising game performance.” That describes the encoder distinction; whether hardware encoding is available depends on your GPU and installed Streamlabs version.

In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings and inspect the Output settings for the selected encoder. If you are using x264, try a faster CPU-usage preset, or select a compatible hardware encoder if one is offered. Change one setting at a time, then check CPU use and the frame-warning counters during the same kind of stream.
Test a lower output resolution
If the output is 1080p and the encoder remains overloaded, try 1280×720. Streamlabs recommends 1280×720 as a general balance between quality and performance and warns that 1080p can have a significant CPU impact. This is a starting point, not a guaranteed fix; compare the resulting picture quality and resource use on your own system. Streamlabs’ getting-started guidance covers its general output recommendations.

Check the scene and loop sources
A looping video may be only one part of the active scene. Streamlabs’ Desktop troubleshooting notes identify sources, animated overlays, multiple browser sources, and browser-source cache as items that can contribute to load. They are possibilities to test, not a diagnosis of your setup.

- Temporarily disable animated overlays and nonessential browser sources.
- Compare CPU and GPU use, along with the frame warnings, against the same loop with the full scene enabled.
- If browser sources appear implicated, test them individually. Consider browser-source cache only when there are clues pointing to those sources; the repository notes include an older Windows cache location, which may not apply to your installed version. Verify the location before deleting anything.
Streamlabs also describes Performance Mode as a modest way to reduce CPU and GPU load. Try it as a comparison if available in your version, but do not expect it to resolve a substantial encoder bottleneck by itself.

Use the warning to choose the next test
- Skipped frames continue: revisit the encoder and preset, then test a lower output resolution. If the issue persists, capture your system and Streamlabs details before making hardware decisions.
- Lagged frames continue: focus on GPU/compositor load and simplify the scene, especially animated or numerous sources.
- Dropped frames continue: investigate the network path rather than assuming that CPU changes will solve it.
- CPU stays high without warnings: compare a simplified scene and encoder settings, and note other demanding programs running at the same time. A high percentage alone does not identify a fault.
