For a 1080p YouTube Live loop, set OBS output to 1920×1080, use 30 fps for mostly static or slow-moving video (or 60 fps for smoother motion if your computer can sustain it), and configure the encoder for CBR with a two-second keyframe interval. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5–14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 6–17 Mbps at 1080p60. Test with your real video and audio, then use YouTube’s stream-health feedback to confirm the connection and encoder remain stable.
Recommended OBS settings for a 1080p YouTube Live loop
These settings target a 1920×1080 stream sent to YouTube. YouTube then transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, so viewers may receive a rendition suited to their device and connection rather than the exact same 1080p feed. YouTube explains its live encoder settings and transcoding.

| Setting | Recommended starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Base (Canvas) Resolution | Match the layout and source content; use 1920×1080 when the scene is designed for 1080p. | The canvas is OBS’s working scene size. Matching it to the content helps avoid unintended scaling. |
| Output (Scaled) Resolution | 1920×1080 | This is the resolution OBS sends to YouTube. |
| Common FPS Values | 30 for static art, ambient footage, or slow scenes; 60 for motion that benefits from smoother movement, if the system can sustain it. | OBS warns that 60-fps streaming can be much more demanding than 30 fps. OBS’s streaming guidance discusses resolution and frame rate trade-offs. |
| Rate Control | CBR (constant bitrate) | Matches YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| Keyframe Interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency. |
| Video Bitrate, H.264 | 1080p30: 5–14 Mbps; 1080p60: 6–17 Mbps | These are YouTube’s recommended ranges, not a guarantee that your connection or encoder can sustain them. |
| Video Bitrate, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p30: 4–10 Mbps; 1080p60: 4–12 Mbps | YouTube lists these ranges too. Confirm that your OBS encoder and YouTube ingest setup support the codec you choose. |
| Protocol | RTMPS where available | YouTube recommends secure ingest using RTMPS. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; for stereo, 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz | These are YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS audio recommendations. |
| Encoder | Use an available hardware encoder if it remains stable; otherwise choose a software encoder preset the CPU can sustain. | Encoder availability and performance vary by computer. OBS’s hardware encoding guide explains the options. |
All bitrate figures above are YouTube recommendations from its live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026; the page does not show a publication date. Choose within the applicable range based on sustained upload capacity and test results, rather than automatically selecting its maximum.
Choose 30 or 60 fps based on the loop
Use 30 fps for mostly still or slow content
For a fixed image, ambient scene, or slow footage, 30 fps is a sensible starting point. It reduces the amount of work the computer must sustain compared with 60 fps, and YouTube’s H.264 recommendation at 1080p30 is 5–14 Mbps.

Use 60 fps when motion needs to look smoother
Choose 60 fps if the loop contains movement where smoother motion is noticeable and your encoder and upload connection can maintain the stream. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation at 1080p60 is 6–17 Mbps. If a representative test shows dropped frames or unstable delivery, reduce the load—starting with 30 fps is one option—instead of assuming a higher frame rate will look better in practice.
Set up OBS and verify the loop
- Prepare a YouTube Live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not share or publish it.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or select the stream key using the options available in your OBS version. Prefer RTMPS where available.
- Set resolution and frame rate. Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080 and select 30 or 60 fps according to the content and the system’s sustained capacity. Match the base canvas to the scene layout and source where practical.
- Configure the encoder. Open Settings → Output and select the streaming encoder you plan to use. Set rate control to CBR, the video bitrate to a suitable value in YouTube’s range for your codec and frame rate, and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Exact encoder fields can differ by OBS version and hardware.
- Set audio deliberately. Use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, YouTube recommends 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Check the source audio level and listen for clipping or silence before relying on a long broadcast.
- Add the prerecorded video source and enable looping. Add the video to your scene using the media-source option available in your OBS version, then enable its loop/repeat behavior in that source’s properties. OBS’s official pages cited here do not document the current exact control label, so check the properties in your installed release rather than relying on a possibly stale menu name.
- Save a dedicated profile. Use Profile → New to create a profile for this YouTube 1080p setup. OBS profiles store stream, video, and output settings, making the configuration easier to restore. See the OBS Profiles guide.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Use footage with similar motion and audio to the intended loop. Confirm the video restarts without an unwanted black frame, audio discontinuity, or interruption to the live output. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s status before using the setup for an extended stream. YouTube’s instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” (YouTube Help.)
Check upload capacity and stream health
Your chosen video bitrate uses upload bandwidth continuously, with additional capacity needed for audio and network variation. A connection that briefly reaches the target is not enough evidence that it will hold over a long broadcast. Test from the same network and computer, with representative audio and motion, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. If delivery is unstable, lower the bitrate within the recommended range or reduce the frame rate, then test again. YouTube advises testing and monitoring rather than treating its bitrate recommendations as a promise of performance: live encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot a 1080p loop
YouTube reports an unstable or poor stream
- Compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity, not just a short speed-test peak.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Try a lower bitrate within the applicable range and test again.
- Confirm the stream is using CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where available.
OBS or the computer struggles to encode
- Try 30 fps if you are streaming at 60 fps and do not need the extra motion smoothness.
- Use an available hardware encoder if it is stable on your machine; otherwise choose a software preset the CPU can sustain.
- Close unnecessary applications and run a sustained test. Encoder and hardware capabilities differ, so a brief preview may not reveal long-run load.
The video does not restart cleanly
- Check the media source’s loop/repeat setting in its properties and confirm the correct file is selected.
- Preview the end-to-start transition, including audio, in a private or unlisted test. If the file itself has a blank tail or abrupt audio cut, adjust the source recording rather than assuming a stream setting will remove it.
The stream is 1080p but some viewers see another quality
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. A 1080p OBS output does not mean every viewer will receive the same rendition; playback quality can vary by device and connection. YouTube’s live encoder page describes this transcoding.

Only loop video and audio you have the right to use. A prerecorded source does not become exempt from copyright rules because it is streamed live. Review YouTube’s current live-stream policies and the rights for music, footage, and other material in your file before broadcasting. Also consider whether a repetitive prerecorded stream offers sufficient original value for your channel; OBS settings cannot determine whether content complies with YouTube’s monetization policies.
